No one's ever guaranteed the spot. I remember that most prognosticators were saying that Reggie Bush would be a lock at number one, and he wasn't.

I'd say your best bet would be Lienart then, San Francisco had the first pick and Lienart being a USC grad who was all of the talk in California would have been the easy pick over Alex Smith. San Francisco was going to take a Quarterback no questions asked and the heavy consensus was the Matt Lienart was going to be the pick until he decided to go back to school.
