A conversation between the BIG CAT and Hurney

JR: Marty, here are the qualities I am looking for in our next coach.

Marty: Wow. I dunno, Mr. Richardson. Coaches like these don't grow on trees.

JR: I know. They grow in the NFC South. Find him.

Marty: Got it, boss!

JR: It is looking more and more like we could wind up with the first overall pick. You remember, the pick you nearly traded to climb up into the draft last year to take Clausen. Fortunately, nobody returned your calls.

Marty: No problem, Big Cat, I changed my cell phone carrier.

JR: I think you missed my point. Anyway, who at the top of the draft fills our needs?

Marty: I was watching the College Football Championship Series, you know, formerly NCAA I-AA, and there is this kid from Villanova...

JR: I was referring to the first rounder--possibly the first pick in the entire 2011 NFL draft.

Marty: I know! I feel pretty sure he will be there when we pick. No need to trade up when you pick first, that is what I always say.

JR: Have you researched Andrew Luck?

Hurney: Another QB? Well, I have heard of him, but he plays on the West Coast and their games are on late. Besides, we have 2 QBs from last year's draft. This kid from Villanova, on the other hand...

JR: Forget Villanova! I didn't even know they played football until 15 minutes ago. Forget the first pick. Who are you lining up for me to interview as our next coach?

Hurney: Considering my new contract is set for a cost of living increase, I am looking to save the Big Cat some coin in this department. Hear me out. Tom Knotts. There was a time when his salary might have been too high, but we can get the winningest coach in NC history for about $50K per year.

JR: That is high school! We need a pro coach!!

Hurney: I did some research, and most of our players actually played in high school. I figured...

JR: Forget what you figured! There is no way a glorified 16-year old baby sitter/probation office with a whistle is going to run this team! What about Schottenheimer, Cowher, Harbaugh, Fisher?

Hurney: I don't think any of them has high school experience, but I will check.

JR: I tell you what: Forget the research on QBs, coaches, and cheerleaders. Get me some names of potential GMs!!

Hurney: Seriously, JR? My job? Well, I...I...hear Matt Millen is available.

JR: That would be an upgrade.

THIS CONVERSATION ACTUALLY HAPPENED, I THINK PROBABLY.

Reminding everyone to have a great Holiday and not step back and laugh at your problems from time to time.

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
