Pat White

Yeah, the thing that has gotten me when I've watched him is his ability to keep plays alive, a la Roethlisberger/Vick... But at times, he seems to be incredibly accurate. I don't mean just hitting guys in the numbers on routine, wide-open throws... But like the Senior Bowl TD throw, he fit it in between the holes in the zone coverage (or at least double covearge, as it seemed there was a defender underneath and a guy over top IIRC). I watched him in several other games as well, (may have been ECU, Cincy, and USF) and he repeatedly threaded the needle to get the ball to guys. I have always thought he would be a great QB in the NFL. The thing, as many of you have mentioned, is consistency, and it has to be developed. I hope we get him.

It surely wasn't against ECU. I was at that game and White looked terrible. He constantly took off running at the first pressure, overthrew receivers, threw mostly screen passes or dump passes and generally looked very poor. He was 11 of 17 for 72 yards and ran 20 times for 97 yards in a 24-3 loss.

He really isn't that special at all and had good games as well as terrible ones. He is Michael Vick lite. He is a good runner who had a few good games throwing the ball. This year he threw for only 1842 yards and only threw 80 times more than he ran the ball. We need a quarterback not a running back who can throw the ball occasionally. We have seen a lot of quarterbacks like him. How many of them have made it in the NFL??

Yeah, I meant to point out he sucked in the ECU game, but I was just mentioning that was one of the games I saw. I'd like to point out, IIRC, the offensive playcalling was HORRIBLE that game as well for WV. No excuses, but White just never looked like he found a rhythm and looked bad. But as I said, there were some games that he really looked sharp, accuracy in particular. And I saw him throw it from the pocket, and it didn't look like an accident, because I've saw him do it before. As you mentioned, he is not the most polished coming out of college, but if he could learn to do what Brees does, with his physical ability, he has great potential.

I'd love for Pat White to make it in the NFL. I'm just not confident he will :(

As off-kilter as it might sound, he might have been better off if Bill Stewart had been WVU head coach (and Jeff Mullen his QB coach) for his entire career. Would the team have won as much? Probably not, but Pat White would likely be way better prepared for the NFL.

(not truly the primary goal of a college coach, sadly)

In one year under the new staff, White grew more as a passer than he had his entire time under Rodriguez. Rod's scheme was run heavy, and it definitely won games (which is the primary goal for a coach) but it left White better suited for a future in the CFL than the NFL.

I would definitely like to see someone gives him a shot, and I pray he's good enough to overcome other limitations (read: his height) but I'm not getting my hopes up.

And no, I don't think it'll be the Panthers. Granted, they gave Chad Johnston a shot (undrafted) but I don't see White landing here.

And for the record, his being black doesn't play into my thinking.

But his being blue and gold? That probably colors my thinking more than I want to admit :sosp:

I agree with the Rodriguez comments. He didnt care about developing White into a passer he cared more about winning games then developing players.

I wouldnt take him above the 4th round like I said he would be a project for the first coupe of years. But to say he doesnt have poise in the pocket would be wrong. IF you base just off the ECU game this year then you need to realise that WVU had a whole new offensive coaching staff and philosophy and it took most of the season for the team to buy into it.

i don't think i really buy that. that's like saying the guy has too much athletic talent to be on the team.

if he can get the ball to his receivers, i don't care if he does it from the pocket or not.

My point was that the guy's skin color doesn't mean squat to me, as long as he gets the job done. The prototypical pocket QB versus the scrambling QB is a personal preference of mine. Have never liked em, probably never will, butthe main point I was trying to make remains the same.

Yeah KT, I wasn't gonna address that issue, but I have to mention it now. This is the ONLY reason that people are saying he can't play QB in the NFL. I won't say it's because they don't think he's smart enough, but more or less it's just because he is black, and that is it. It has always pissed me off that black QBs aren't given a chance to come into the league as QBs just because on average they are more athletic.

Reggie McNeal, Josh Cribbs, Antwan Randle El, Hines Ward, Brad Smith, etc. You're telling me those guys couldn't do what Rex Grossman did in his time as a starter? Grossman was given the benefit of the doubt because he is white. Heck, Ken Dorsey has logged starts as an NFL QB and he couldn't throw a 10 yard out, let alone throw a ball into the ocean out of a boat.

I feel ALL college QBs should be given the chance to start at QB in the league if that's what they played in college. The issue with black QBs is that the undercover racism behind them taking a historically "white position" is the elephant in the room that no one in the NFL wants to acknowledge. The powers that be let a guy like Warren Moon (who had to fight years to even be given his chance as an NFL QB), Kordell Stewart, McNair, or Vick play because their dominance was clear. But I don't think that the number of black QBs in the NFL is anywhere proportional to the number of black QBs in college. Why should a guy have to switch positions for being an outstanding athlete with great college numbers? Simple. Racism.

Now, I'll stop before it's moved to the Tinderbox, lol. WAR PAT WHITE!

i agree...100% i think nate davis and josh freeman are rated high on draft boards...just saying...one of them will fall

If he hadn't done as well as he did in the bowl game he wouldn't even have gotten any attention as an NFL prospect. He had a number of games this year where he had between 100 and 150 yards for a game and more running yards than passing yards. Hardly a pedigree for a starting NFL quarterback.

As for Rodriguez worrying more about wins than developing kids for the NFL, that is their job and what they get paid for. I have never seen a college coach get bonused on how many guys they had who went to the NFL. It is all about wins. They are coaches not NFL development coordinators.

DO NOT WANT!

I have watched WVU for two straight years now since Noel Devine goes there, and I have been waiting for the day that their golden boy, Pat White, left...

He won't be a very effective QB in the NFL. He's too small, and played in an offense where his limited passes were setup by the option, and not reading coverage.

Stay away. Stay far far away. We already have 2 Pro-Bowl caliber RB's, and in my opinion that's all White is suited for.

He would still have gotten looks but I agree he helped himself alot in the Bowl game. As far as Rodriguez goes yes he is suppoed to win games but if you dont develop the talent and get them into the NFL that is going to hurt recruiting.

He would be a project at best. Like I said I wouldnt want to spend higher than a 4th round pick on him.

Yeah, he's too small. Hey, Drew Brees, you are too small to play in the NFL.... oh wait.....

You haven't seen the best of Pat White, trust me. He just needs a chance. And the small QB argument is retarded (Brees/Garcia/etc) are all very very small for QB "standard".

It is not retarded. Comparing Pat White to Drew Brees is though.

It's quite obvious to anyone that knows football and watched the amount of Pat White games that I have that White relies on his option ability to open up receivers. Their whole offense was built around the ability to make opposing defenses play up on WR's. That won't cut it in the NFL with the speed of the game. His "vision" consists of WR's getting separation from their defender as he is moving around behind the line.

Put Darius Reynaud on a team with a true passing QB in college instead of the WVU offense, and he would have been a 1st or 2nd round pick and be at least a #3 WR for some NFL team.

Sure, Vick made it look easy. But again, Pat White is not the player that Mike Vick was at one time.

Pat White will be the next in line of the Randle El's, just not anywhere near as good of a player once his position changes.

He'll be in the CFL or the Arena League before you know it.
