Analysis

Jimmy Clausen

Jimmy had a pretty bad day, being sacked 5 times and pressured a further 7 times with Gross, Bernadeau & Goodson being the major culprits. Still he had a pretty torrid day on the 17 drop backs when he didn’t get pressured, which included the interception aimed at LaFell.

What continues to be apparent is that as soon as he is pressured consistently, he starts ‘feeling’ it when it’s not even coming. Whilst he was not responsible for walking into any sacks, hits or pressure, he failed consistently to hit his receivers when given time.

Want some perspective on this? Sam Bradford was pressured 8 out of 43 drop backs against the Falcons. When he was pressured, his stats turn up very similar to Clausen’s, however Bradford tallied a 90.8 QB rating when he wasn’t pressured. For the record, Bradford is pressured approximately 34% of drop backs so far this season, compared to Clausen’s 50% of drop backs.

So other than that his raw passing directions do not look too bad. Some fairly steady numbers and some poor, however absolutely no big plays are present and that is what is really hurting him. He is careful with the ball, but he can’t find the open man, or complete a deep pass in single coverage for a big play.

Now it’s time to look for those positives in the dark. We finally saw him step up into the pocket. He only threw it away once. He continues to try to play sensibly (which is exactly what the best QBs do). Negatives are a little easier to detect. No big play potential, although he did show more willingness to throw downfield. On his arse more than his feet. He plays sensibly, but can;t take advantage of matchups.

Armanti Edwards

Finally we see Armanti since his last outing. Thing is it was just one play, where trick plays only work if they have a series of plays to set them up. Doing it once achieves nothing. Let’s get him in there a little more at receiver and quarterback and get teams actually guessing at what he is going to do. This would actually relieve pressure off Clausen, as it’s obvious the FO want Armanti at receiver long term so he wouldn’t perceive him as a threat.

Brandon LaFell

This ended up being an average day at the office for LaFell, who is starting to become Jimmy’s favourite target. However he isn’t setting the world alight when it is thrown in his direction. He continues to be effective against the shorter DBs, picking up 6 of 7 throws. What I want to see him do now is just shed the first tackle and use his power in the defensive backfield. Promising as a possession receiver (despite 5 drops on the season), but nothing yet as a game changer.

David Gettis

Starter in name, but I feel like LaFell is more a focus point of the gameplan. He continues to show his potential with his 22 yard grab against Moore, with just his consistency slowing him down. Personally if the FO just told Clausen to go for it I think you see Gettis pick up some serious yardage.

Greg Hardy

With Brown on IR, it’s now Hardy’s chance to make Brayton obsolete. A quiet day for Hardy due to the sparse game time, however he once again brought pressure with another 2 hits on the QB. He now has 6 for the season which is behind only Johnson (7). Continued his development at LE, but we saw him also line up at DT and at LB. I like the fact that they value his athleticism, but I still think he would be much better served just learning the basics at RE where he is less exposed.

What will be interesting is if/when Johnson is re-signed, does Hardy or he move to RE?

Andre Neblett

I have been wanting some more playing time for this guy for a couple of weeks. He had a good presence in the passing game and hadn’t been abused in the run game. Amazingly he had featured in more snaps until his injury midway through the second than Brown and Hardy, then returned late in the 3rd and played 11 of 19 snaps. He contributed two tackles which were both defensive stops, which considering the struggles our team was having controlling the run, was actually pretty darn good.

I want to see more of this guy, he could actually be a real player.

Robert McClain

The struggles continue. McClain has done little but get abused when he has seen more playing time and it’s a clear sign that as criticised as our first three are, our 4th CB is long ways off from being ready for anything other than prevent schemes. Gave up every single pass thrown at him, whilst allowing Douglas to pick up 46 yards where 14 of which were after the catch. As a rookie you can;t expect too much, however he is no captain.

Jordan Pugh

1 play and you give up a catch for 7 yards and don’t even complete the tackle. That’s just amusing!

From my own limited and uninformed perspective I'd like to see Hardy/Brown taking the RE spot and keeping CJ at LE. He has already done very well there and Hardy/Brown cycling at RE should be a fairly powerful force on the line next year if development continues for them both.

hey at least these guys are getting on the field playing. well except armanti...lol.

Yeah this is true, quite amazing how much our rookies actually are playing.

Unfortunately that is a pretty big indicator at where our problems lie. We have absolutely no experience. Anywhere. Our 'veteran's' (other than Gross, Gamble & Smith) have around 2-3 years max, with most never having completed a season.

where was this from?

It's a site that I am signed up to. Their stats differ from NFL.com because they sit down and re-watch every single game. So some things are difficult for them to get definitively, however things like the trenches etc, they are pretty good.

Yeah I am pretty certain Johnson would stay at LE, however with Brayton primarily a LE, you would have assumed he would have been back up to Johnson and allow Brown to start at RE. I certainly did not expect to see Brayton as our RE pas rusher :o

Brown played a lot at LE in his rookie year, so maybe they are inducting Hardy at that position to then get him in at RE. At the moment I feel Brown has a lot more to give, so having three promising young guys is a pretty good position to be in.

don't be coy. are you going to say the name of the site or not?

Profootballfocus.com. Great site, but its cost to get the stats/analysis he's posting.

That's the one, I was just a little unsure on posting too much of their stats as I didn't want to essentially post their 'premium stats'.

They are pretty solid though and for things in OLine DLine interactions they are pretty solid and have a very good understanding of schemes and the like. The only thing they struggle with is grading the WRs and the DBs

Their play by play positional breakdown is pretty in depth and they offer formation usage as well.

Putting it basically, they are a heck more trustworthy than any media outlet and they analyse everyone on the same parameters. So if you disagree with how they record something, at least it applies to every player.
