The Good Things About Christmas

spinoff question. why even start the lie to kids about santa? why not just tell them, "mommy and daddy are santa" from the get go? they are gonna learn sooner or later anyway.

Yeah but its more fun if they think its Santa. Then you get the cute pictures with Santa, and they don't go running to school telling all their friends he is fake. Then you have to deal with other pissed off parents.

Until a year or so ago, I really didn't care for Christmas much at all. This year especially I found new liking for it, mostly because of my fiancee and her 3 yo daughter. My kids are teens, so with a new little one its a lot more fun.

To answer the OP question - giving, and hanging out with family relaxing.

Because of the look on the childrens faces when they see they got exactly what they wanted as if by magic. If they knew that you could have just got them the presents at basically any time it ruins the magic of the moment.

what about the look on the child's face when they find out they've been lied to all along?

By that time they are older and figure it out anyway.

This is a situation where the future pain is far outweighed by the current pleasure.

I've had this conversation many times with people and started with an opinion like yours. People much better than me at this sort of discussion ultimately convinced me of the value of the tradition.

i'm neutral at this point and considering the pros and cons of both paths. i'm not so good at discussion either. just at asking questions and listening.

When weighing pros and cons I don't see many cons to the Santa path. Other than the lying to your kids thing, but you are going to do that anyway and do it many times in all likelihood.
