The Next Head Coach

GREG MANUSKY

Manusky2.jpg...Manusky1.jpg

MOST RECENT JOB: Defensive Coordinator, San Francisco 49ers

HISTORY: 49ers DC (2007-present) Chargers LB Coach (2002-2006) Redskins LB Coach (2001) Bucs intern (1999-2000) Twelve years as a player with the Redskins (1988-1990) Vikings (1991-1993) and Chiefs (1994-1999)

DOB: 08/12/66 (44)

STRENGTHS: Smart, hard nosed guy. Take a look at the Pro Bowl rosters for the 2000s and chances are good you’ll find somebody that was coached by Manusky. It’s quite a list, including Patrick Willis, Shawne Merriman, Donnie Edwards, LaVar Arrington and the great Junior Seau. He’s got a reputation for being a strong communicator and the defenses he’s coached have generally been strong. He’s also worked under good defensive minds like Tony Dungy, Monte Kiffin, Mike Singletary, Wade Phillips and Marty Schottenheimer.

QUESTIONS: His defensive units have usually finished in the middle to low end of the scale in total yards and points allowed. Despite rep as a hard-nosed player, seems to take a “bend but don’t break” approach sometimes. Not as experienced as some other candidates.

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Played for the Redskins during the same three year period when Marty Hurney was working in the PR department. Was signed as an undrafted free agent by Hurney mentor Bobby Beathard. Two former Panthers on 49ers roster (Joe Nedney and David Carr). Coached against the Panthers in one of this season’s two wins.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: 49er RB Coach Tom Rathman could make a good OC. Schottenheimer connection could help him land Marty’s brother Kurt as an ST coach. Would love if he could bring OL Coach Mike Solari along.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: No other interest known. Probably ours if we want him.

ODDS AND ENDS: Was named to John Madden’s “All Madden Team” for 1991. Northern accent might put off Southerners (not that that's a big deal)

ANALYSIS: What the Panthers are probably hoping for in looking at Manusky is the next Mike Smith, i.e. the guy that nobody is talking about who suddenly comes in and sets the league on fire. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of evidence to suggest that’s what Manusky would be. Smith’s defensive units were consistently in the top ten of the league in yards and scoring. Manusky can only boast of one season in the top ten in scoring (2009) and while the list of Pro Bowlers he’s coached is nice, that doesn’t make him head coaching material. Personally, I’d love to have him as a linebacker coach, but not as a head coach or defensive coordinator.

Although I've liked him for a while, I'm not completely sold on rivera because hell, I'm not a professional NFL-head-coach-talent-evaluatin-muthafugga.

But I trust former player opinions:

I'm not saying that's sufficient, but it helps give me some confidence.

players loved fox as well, didn't make him a good coach. just a players coach.

good to know he is respected, but i just want more.

ROB RYAN

ryan2.jpg...ryan1.jpg

MOST RECENT JOB: Defensive Coordinator, Cleveland Browns

HISTORY: Browns DC (2009-present) Raiders DC (2004-2008) Patriots LB Coach (2000-2003) Cardinals DB Coach (1994-1995) Eleven years in college coaching, starting out as an assistant at Western Kentucky (two years prior to Jack harbaugh’s arrival)

DOB: 12/13/62 (48)

STRENGTHS: Undeniable defensive pedigree. Son of one of the better defensive coaches in league history (Buddy Ryan) and twin brother of one of the league’s hotter coaches right now (Rex Ryan of the Jets). Has a history of running strong defenses and was considered a perennial head coaching candidate in his Raider years. Very aggressive in philosophy.

QUESTIONS: Career has been somewhat on the decline since his Oakland days. His Cleveland defenses weren’t special. Like his brother, sometimes has a tendency to shoot his mouth off. The Raiders had ample opportunity to make him a head coach but didn’t.

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Works alongside ST coach Brad Seely, who had the same job with the Panthers early in their existence. Former Panther QB Jake Delhomme was with the Browns this past season. Was working for his father with the Cardinals during an embarrassing loss to the Panthers in their inaugural season (Buddy walked out to jeers from the crowd). His father Buddy coached under Weeb Eubank with the Jets. Eubank was Panthers owner Jerry Richardson's head coach in his playing days.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: Seely’s a possibility, and not a bad one. Brian Daboll has a decent rep as an OC/QB coach. Could also bring DL coach Brian Cox along, something which would double the “loudmouth factor”. Could also see him reaching out to old Raiders colleague Tom Cable to coach the O-Line. Maybe James Lofton for the receivers as well.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: May be some other interest thanks to his family name and his brother’s success. Personality might not mesh well with that of owner Jerry Richardson or GM Marty Hurney (He’d certainly make training camp and practices a less family-friendly experience).

ODDS AND ENDS: Directed a profanity-laced, largely unprintable rant at former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin a while back after Kiffin suggested that Al Davis had a hand in Ryan’s running of the Raider defense. Picture searches of him on the internet produce some entertaining results. Brother Rex once yelled “that’s why my brother got rid of your ass” at cornerback DeAngelo Hall during a Jets-Redskins game. Says he talks more football with his mom these days than his dad (mother Doris wrote a dissertation on football strategy, so the genes are there on both sides).

"ANALYSIS: If you wanted to get as far as possible from the personality of John Fox, this would be the ideal choice. But is it a good choice? It’s concerning that even with the popularity he enjoyed in Oakland – a franchise where his personality was a perfect fit – not only was he never offered a head coaching job, but he was passed over for Lane Kiffin. As I recall, there were some questions from players at the time, but it’s the Raiders so controversy is the norm.

Another concern is that his family’s head coaching history isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. As a head coach, Buddy started out hot but tailed off, and there are indications Rex may do the same thing. Yes, they’re entertaining, but no member of the Ryan family yet has a Super Bowl ring as a head coach.

In my mind, Ryan is the kind of guy I’d rather have as a DC than a head coach, but it’d be overstating to say he can’t be a good head coach. You never know. He might be even better than his dad and brother.

The one thing you can say for sure: It definitely wouldn't be boring. For the beat writers, hiring Ryan would be the gift that keeps on giving.

he's had success, his players love him, and they think he'd make a great coach. what "more" do you want from a coordinator or assistant? that's not meant to be sarcastic, i'm genuinely curious what else you want to see to sell you on a guy with no track record as a head coach.

Rob Ryan's father Buddy was also a LB's coach for the Jets in the late 60's and early

70's...who was the Jet's HC at that time?...none other than Weeb Ewbank

Why is that relevant? Weeb Ewbank was Jerry Richardson's HC in Baltimore for the Colts when Jerry was a WR
