Lombardi, currently an NFL Network analyst, pushed the speculation a step further Sunday by saying on the air that the 49ers would soon be out of the running for coaching candidate Jim Harbaugh.

Lombardi said the Stanford coach would soon return to his alma mater of Michigan.

That would be great for us....end all of this Harbaugh to the NFL knob slobbering and make it more likely that Luck will declare.

Understand this......virtually NO college coaches have made the jump to the NFL and been worth a damn.

The Panthers will be much better off going the coordinator route.

Read and heard that too, if it's true, then i dont know what to say, how can you NOT offer him a contract??? i would chase after him highly if i am the panthers.

There are really only two reasons why we would be hearing at this point that Harbaugh is not considering the Panthers:

1) The Panthers have directly or indirectly communicated that they will not pursue him

2) Luck has told Harbaugh that he absolutely is staying in school next year

If Harbaugh still doesn't know about Luck, or he thinks Luck is leaning towards going to the NFL, why would anyone say that he's nto considering the Panthers? The only answer is that the Panthers are not interested in pursuing him. Why in the hell would Harbaugh want to talk to the 49ers and the Broncos but not the Panthers if he thinks Luck is going to declare? So again, it's got to be one of the two options above.

Let's hope it's not #2.

As for #1, I wouldn't surprised if the Panthers weren't interested in making an offer to Harbaugh. I could see JR being opposed to the idea of bringing in this coach/QB combo for a lot of reasons. JR and Hurney obviously want Harbaugh to leave Stanford (to increase the likelihood that Luck declares), so they could be motivated to participate in the bidding.

Option 3 is that nobody has a damn clue, but then again, why would report that the Panthers are out of the running? I don't buy the "media doesn't want Harbaugh in Carolina" talk.
