Hurney Must Go

Hes made too many huge mistakes that have set this franchise back. While a lot of the blame for this disaster relies on JR and Fox, Hurney is also a culprit and should be parted with.

1. The failure to bring a capable young QB in the organization when we had a stable vet in Delhomme he could learn from.

2. Trading our future 2nd rounder for New Englands 3rd rounder to draft Armanti Edwards.

3. Trading our future 1st rounder for Everette Brown, I will say this wasn't as bad as it could have been because we did get an extra fourth to take Goodson but this just leads me to my next point.

4. Trading multiple mid rounds picks for worthless DTs, we should have had depth at DT and could have used those picks to try and find a diamond in the rough like Goodson.

5. Failing to get anything back for Julius Peppers.

6. Failed to sell high on Steve Smith and now we are facing a situation where we will be lucky to get a 4th round pick for him.

7. Compound those last two with the DWill situation which hasn't happened yet but I fear he will leave and we will get nothing based on past experience.

8. Failing to bring in a legit 2nd WR for all the years that we had Steve Smith in his prime. Look at an organization like the Ravens who had nothing at WR then in one offseason they bring in Boldin, Housh and Stallworth. We failed to capitalize on the peak years of our GOAT offensive player because of personel decisions.

I will give him credit for his ability to find talent in the draft. For the most part he has hit on his first round picks and hes found some gems in later rounds but many GMs have done the same and they haven't made the mistakes I listed above.

Basically what I'm saying is we could be in worse shape then having Hurney but it we are going to fully turn this disaster around we need a new GM with a new gameplan who can limit the big mistakes that have become a pattern especially in recent years with Hurney.

I can tell that we should hire you, and your badass skills of being a GM of a video game.

Yeah I agree I don't think Hurney is going anywhere.

A lot of Huddlers say hindsight is 20/20 but that is how a GM is judged. It is in fact the only way to judge a GM. Either moves work or they don't. It doesn't matter what anyone one thinks at the time a move is made, only how it pans out.

Do I think Hurney should go? Yes. Will it? Doubt it.

You seem to have a lot of common sense, on this and other posts. I am thinking Hurney will lose some power to the new coach.

Hurney's record has not been good lately. Anybody who thinks we are benefitting from his moves is an idiot. Here is why:

Corvey Irvin: Was a fifth rounder on many boards, Hurney grabs him in the 3rd when we desperately need DTs. Practice Squad fodder.

Jonathan Stewart: Has practiced about 20 times in 2 years. Sure, he ran for 1100 yards last season, but we drafted him injured, conferred with doctors, and he has not healed. He may be on the field and successful now, but for how long?

Because we drafted Stewart, we traded our second rounder and the following year's first rounder for Jeff Otah, who had a history of injuries at Pitt. He has missed about half of his games as a Panther. Even if healthy, did we really give a first and second rounder for a RIGHT tackle?

Jimmy Clausen is well documented. However, in evaluating Hurney, discuss what he TRIED to do: Trade our first rounder this year to move up to draft CLAUSEN! Imagine what people would be saying if we get the top pick? Hurney would be tarred and feathered.

Armanti Edwards: A 5' 10" QB at a small college-how is that better than a college WR who has experience returning punts? This was the most important draft in team history--HURNEY's WORDS. Needs: WR, DT, QB depth. We draft a WR in the early 3rd. Time for a DT, right? Nope. We grab Edwards.

So we wait to the 4th round to grab that DT we needed. Instead, we draft Eric Norwood, a player with no real position. A special teamer.

With no fifth rounder, Hurney resorts to BPA in the sixth. We do great, drafting Gettis, Pike, and Hardy. Still, no DT. Oh well.

The biggest draft in team history, and Hurney sidesteps needs and nearly trades away the rights to the biggest Franchise QB since Elway. The fact that Clausen fell past people who desperately need a QB tells me that they saw something in him Hurney did not. That is scary.

Kurb points out that Hurney has been money on the first rounders. That is a good point, but the contract extensions and these facts diminish his point:

His first rounders have been solid, but not superstars. Beason to me was the most impressive pick. DeAngelo next. However, TDavis, Gross, Stewart, Peppers were in the top third of the draft, where you would expect to find eventual superstars. Still, I would take solid starters. Why no QBs or WRs? Interesting.

Where Hurney has screwed up is when he has traded up. He seems to struggle in the middle rounds, but I have not compared it to other teams' success. I wonder if it is due to the fact that our system does not seem to have specific player trait requirements like they seem to in Pittsbugh or New England. Just some thoughts with no hard evidence in support. However, Kurb's point is solid. He has had good success in the first round.

We are talking about the guy that awarded duhlomme a rediculous contract, said doooshawn foster was worth 5 mill, hung onto morgan to long, and now Gross for 7 mil.. we can go on and on with that. You should be able to nail the first round pick because 95% of the time its a nobrainer... hes mediocre at best and damn sure cant evaluate talent that well..

I agree with everything you say, except I think we are paying more for Gross and, as left tackles go, he is a bargain. You could add that he let Moose go when he has no eye for WR talent. However, why does he struggle with QBs and WRs? I think, talent wise, they are the two most difficult positions to judge. Even when Delhomme was playing well, the QBs we drafted/brought in were terrible. WRs? Hackett, Jarrett, Colbert, Edwards--what? How can an NFL team thrive with a game manager at QB when no WR draft pick or free agent has stuck during the GM's tenure? How long were we content to ride Moose and Smith--2 guys Hurney did not draft--before age caught up? Now we have 3 rookie WRs and 2 rookie QBs, a few undrafted, semi-retired veteran QBs--Where is the vision? The fact is, nobody on our coaching staff or front office really knows these positions. WR and QB? in the NFL? THat is how you become 1-12.

Love how many fans keep bring up delhomme last contract.

Which was a necessary evil as the panthers needed cap space, and they created it by giving delhomme a contract extension. Yes, it was more than he was worth, although that contract hasn't hurt the team at all!

So keep bring up that subject, cause it just shows y'all don't

even know what you are talking about.

yea, you do.

you admitted it

no I didn't. I don't really even care to discuss anything further if your just going to be childish. I've accepted that this season is a wash, as in when we lose it doesn't bother me like it would in 08 or 09 because it's obvious the team isn't playing well. Just have to wait until next season. Accepting failure isn't on anybody's mind.
