Hurney Must Go

Hes made too many huge mistakes that have set this franchise back. While a lot of the blame for this disaster relies on JR and Fox, Hurney is also a culprit and should be parted with.

1. The failure to bring a capable young QB in the organization when we had a stable vet in Delhomme he could learn from.

2. Trading our future 2nd rounder for New Englands 3rd rounder to draft Armanti Edwards.

3. Trading our future 1st rounder for Everette Brown, I will say this wasn't as bad as it could have been because we did get an extra fourth to take Goodson but this just leads me to my next point.

4. Trading multiple mid rounds picks for worthless DTs, we should have had depth at DT and could have used those picks to try and find a diamond in the rough like Goodson.

5. Failing to get anything back for Julius Peppers.

6. Failed to sell high on Steve Smith and now we are facing a situation where we will be lucky to get a 4th round pick for him.

7. Compound those last two with the DWill situation which hasn't happened yet but I fear he will leave and we will get nothing based on past experience.

8. Failing to bring in a legit 2nd WR for all the years that we had Steve Smith in his prime. Look at an organization like the Ravens who had nothing at WR then in one offseason they bring in Boldin, Housh and Stallworth. We failed to capitalize on the peak years of our GOAT offensive player because of personel decisions.

I will give him credit for his ability to find talent in the draft. For the most part he has hit on his first round picks and hes found some gems in later rounds but many GMs have done the same and they haven't made the mistakes I listed above.

Basically what I'm saying is we could be in worse shape then having Hurney but it we are going to fully turn this disaster around we need a new GM with a new gameplan who can limit the big mistakes that have become a pattern especially in recent years with Hurney.

Drafting late in the draft--easy to see his approach: take fallers. Duke Robinson, Pike, Hardy, Norwood, Not a bad approach, but doesn't require that much research. Besides, all teams have role players. the top of the draft is where champions are born. It is like going fishing and coming home with 4 nice bream and everyone else lands a nice 8 pound Bass.

he's been a good GM for a long time and I believe it was JR pressuring Fox and Co. to make bold trades to save their jobs.

His 1st and 3rd rounders have been homeruns. 2nd round is poo.

The good outweighs the bad and I'm cool with Hurney hanging around.

1. The failure to bring a capable young QB in the organization when we had a stable vet in Delhomme he could learn from. Most Panthers fan were beating off when he brought Carr here. By the end of last season everyone was crowning Moore the messiah. Hindsight is 20/20, ain't it?

2. Trading our future 2nd rounder for New Englands 3rd rounder to draft Armanti Edwards. I'm going to act like you're not actually passing judgment on a ROOKIE who Fox obviously has no interest in developing or giving opportunities to

3. Trading our future 1st rounder for Everette Brown, I will say this wasn't as bad as it could have been because we did get an extra fourth to take Goodson but this just leads me to my next point. Still too early to pass judgment on Brown, but he's definitely improving. I'm not sure what the big problem with this is. Peppers was on the way out and we were going to need help at DE. So we made the moves we needed to to bring in a highly touted DE prospect. We didn't over-draft Brown. Also, Goodson could be a starting RB so, as long as Brown continues to progress this actually looks pretty damn good to me.

4. Trading multiple mid rounds picks for worthless DTs, we should have had depth at DT and could have used those picks to try and find a diamond in the rough like Goodson. Leonard and Tyler actually did their part when we brought them in. Along with Hollis, these guys played pretty well and were the stop-gap that we needed them to be. My biggest issue with how we've dealt with the DT position is letting Damione Lewis go, but I'll agree with you that we haven't handled DT very well.

5. Failing to get anything back for Julius Peppers. This isn't rec league soccer. Not everyone gets a reward. We're not entitled to be rewarded every time a player leaves. Also, no one was going to spend the money it would require to get him while he was under the Franchise Tag.

6. Failed to sell high on Steve Smith and now we are facing a situation where we will be lucky to get a 4th round pick for him. Still no solid evidence whatsoever that Smith even asked for a trade or that that scenario is even a possibility. That said, early in the season when we could have "sold high," we still thought Moore was our QB and that Clausen had potential. I know everyone expects the GM to have a Crystal Ball but there was no way to know that Smith would want out (if he does). If he doesn't want out, then you effing keep your best player, especially when we have no playmakers at WR to fill his spot.

7. Compound those last two with the DWill situation which hasn't happened yet but I fear he will leave and we will get nothing based on past experience. Again, we're not entitled to be compensated. I think we'll resign the guy, but if we don't, what's the big deal? We have three strong RB's behind him.

Granted. We've poo the bed trying to get a #2 Receiver in here.

It's real convenient to highlight a handful of "mistakes" and then conclude that Hurney sucks. Let's not forget how absurdly successful he's been at the LB position. He's also done a great job in the past of signing/drafting players in the Secondary and on the O-line. You try to say that Hurney is going to f*ck up with D-Will, but couldn't we just as easily say that he's had great success at the RB position since he's given us three great RB's behind D-Will, so we have the freedom to do whatever we want with him?

Beason, Davis, D. Williams, Stewart, Otah, Kalil, Gross, Gamble. Whoa, looks like, out of our core of players, they were basically all drafted in the early rounds of the draft. So, by your reasoning, Hurney has done a good job. Weirddd.

then you add in smitty, witherspoon, warton, manning, godfrey, johnson, anderson, in the 3rd. They were all valued contributors. Johnson and Anderson have been huge bright spots this season especially.

1. The failure to bring a capable young QB in the organization when we had a stable vet in Delhomme he could learn from.

only opportunity for this was 2008, and you don't do this after the end to the season Matt Moore had. In 2007 he brought in David Carr which was universally lauded.

2. Trading our future 2nd rounder for New Englands 3rd rounder to draft Armanti Edwards.

yeah this was a bad move.

3. Trading our future 1st rounder for Everette Brown, I will say this wasn't as bad as it could have been because we did get an extra fourth to take Goodson but this just leads me to my next point.

this was a desperation move to apply pressure to peppers and set themselves up for after he left. I don't agree with it, but I understand the logic. it's 2008 fallout.

4. Trading multiple mid rounds picks for worthless DTs, we should have had depth at DT and could have used those picks to try and find a diamond in the rough like Goodson.

they were 5th and 6th round picks so who cares. the team felt they could still compete, and after the signing of hollis thomas they turned into one of the best defenses in the league.

as far as diamonds in the rough, if you're going to cite losing a 5th and 6th rounder in 2010 as a reason to fire him, should landing gettis and hardy in the 6th be a reason to keep him?

5. Failing to get anything back for Julius Peppers.

when would he have had the opportunity? After 2007 when Peppers looked done? nobody would have wanted him for that contract number.

after his contract was up in 2008? well, remember they franchised him, and he openly stated he A. wanted to play in the 3-4 and B. would only accept a trade (by refusing to sign an extension) to four mystery teams. he made himself impossible to trade, and we'll never know what was offered.

After 2009, the panthers would have had to franchise him, risk paying him 20 million dollars (in a year where hurney was not allowed to add salary) and find someone to send compensation, who would have course also take the risk of not being able to sign him long term. this was a valid concern since twice peppers had turned down a contract which would have made him the highest paid defender in football.

blaming him for the peppers situation shows your ignorance.

6. Failed to sell high on Steve Smith and now we are facing a situation where we will be lucky to get a 4th round pick for him.

last time you could have sold high on steve smith was 2008. he would have been hanged for that.

7. Compound those last two with the DWill situation which hasn't happened yet but I fear he will leave and we will get nothing based on past experience.

they'd get nothing anyway. they'd have to franchise and trade the least valuable position in the nfl. Running backs don't get traded for much, and any of them can succeed in the right system. Peyton Hillis is worth one brady quinn. How many brady quinns do you think DeAngelo is worth, and who would you trade those brady quinns in for?

Moose was a legit number 2 receiver when they brought him in in 2008.

He also brought in ricky proehl who was key for the super bowl run.

in 2004, he drafted a guy who looked like a hell of a rookie wr. im not going to fault him for not knowing that colbert was going to completely collapse. but after he did? he went out and signed the best free agent WR on the market, which was keyshawn johnson.

after the panthers went to their BPA strategy after 2005, the cards simply didn't fall. maybe you want greg jennings over DeAngelo Williams? or Sydney Rice over Jon Beason? Frankly after the 2nd round wide receivers are complete crap shoots.

i'll finish this with the final point that i made in the huge thread where i said why he shouldn't be fired. if you really want to bring in a big time GM, or a young genius on the rise, as an owner what kind of message does it send to them to fire the person who just executed your dumpster fire? hurney takes it on the chin week in and week out and was just following orders. Fire him after that?

    • I did.  He simply said s/he had no knowlege of it.  Said he had the injury in camp and sat for a few days--then said there was an announcement that he had foot surgery and nobody knows if it is related to the camp injury or not.  This person should know, but didn't.  The source is a journalist friend of mine but seemed a bit frustrated that the details have not been released (at least s/he did not have the details at the time).
