Those who want Cam Newton First overall...

How many QBs with a similar skill set, along with football IQ, have been successful in the NFL? For every 1 you name, I imagine people could name 5 who busted. He is a high risk pick, one that, if wrong, would cripple the franchise. While he is a stud and a great college player, I see his transition to the NFL much more risky than Luck's.

i don't think thats a fare concept. for every "mobile" qb whos busted there been 3 times as many pocket passers who bust. the concept of a athletic qb who is able to pass is pretty new. where as only 3-4 with the ablity to play in the nfl might come out, 20 pocket passers come also.

Cam Newton is not a Black The Golden Calf of Bristol- not close. The knock on The Golden Calf of Bristol was his throwing motion and lack of finesse plus he wasn't that fast or elusive.

newton is much more than a running quarterback. When early in the year teams let him run he did so and scored double digit touchdowns with his feet. When teams stacked the box to stop him running he threw the ball with ease. In the last 2 games against ranked teams, Alabama and South Carolina he threw for a total of 7 TDs in addition to running for 3 more. For the season he has throw for 28 TDs and run for 20 more. Compare that to Luck who has thrown the same 28 TDs and 4 rushing TDs. He has 3000 while Newton has 2600. Luck's passer rating is 166 while Newton's is 188.

The truth is that much of the prejudice against Newton is because he plays out of a spread and can run. But as a pure passer he is every bit as talented as Luck without the weird delivery.

As for character, football knowledge etc, that will be discussed ad nauseum over the next several months.

See this is where the great FO like the Colts separate themselves. In 1998 this would have been Manning/Leaf. Leaf was by far considered to have better physical attributes (ie Arm strength, Athleticism, ETC) but Manning had a better work ethic and was clean off the field. Now before you get me wrong I would love to get him if we got some blockbuster deal for the #1 spot, bu there is no way I would chose Newton over Luck.

Not sure that's fair, other than "lolz spread"

Newton has a bigger arm, MUCH better throwing motion, is more athletic, is a bigger guy and isn't nearly the project that The Golden Calf of Bristol was coming in. The Golden Calf of Bristol might be a little higher on the intangibles, whatever the f**k that means. Newton seems to be able to rally a team just fine, though and is playing well through some pretty big-time adversity right now.

Comparing Newton to Vick doesn't work, they're not the same type of QB. Think Freeman in TB or Big Ben in Pit.

Biggest concern I have with Newton is if he is going to give a poo about football once he gets paid.

Exactly. Newton has everything physically he needs to be an all-pro QB its whether he has the determination and work ethic. This is why time and again I would chose Luck over Newton I just think he wants it more and is willing to work his tail off to get it.

Haven't really heard that Luck has a great work ethic or watches film religiously, etc. It will be interesting to hear the interviews and folks dissecting both of them.

Newton is the exact same style of QB as The Golden Calf of Bristol.

lol at the people who prefer one over the over.

It's hilarious how short a memory people have.

LOL at people who can't see the basic differences. Anyone with any eye for quarterbacks can see they aren't close in talent or ability.

Really thats all I have heard about him. And you can see it in his progression from last season (good) to this season (outstanding). Remember this guy was at his prom less then 3 years ago. Now he is being compared to Elway and Manning.

THANK YOU. He's not an NFL Qb. Everyone is comparing him to Big Ben and Freeman....they were both passing quarterbacks in college who had nice running abilities once the pocket collapsed. Cam runs the ball 25 times a game on most days...his throws he completes are when the box is stacked and he throws it up 40 yards and a receiver just has to run under it. I don't see any signs of being a NFL franchise qb

What folks have said is that he is the most NFl ready. I have heard he is smart and has made great progress under the tutelage of Harbaugh. What I haven't heard is that he is a workaholic, driven kind of guy who is highly competitive for example, or outworks everyone else.

Sometimes the old "most pro ready" quarterback label doesn't guarantee success. Lets be honest, Clausen was considered the most pro ready quarterback this year and how did that work out??

Forget that his yards per attempt are over 10. Forget his completion percentage is almost 70%. Forget that he has thrown 28 TDs which is the same number Luck has thrown. Forget he ran 20 more. And definitely forget that Luck played against 1 ranked team this year and lost. Newton played the past 2 weeks against ranked teams, Alabama and South Carolina and threw 7 TDs and ran for 3 more. And he will play the same Oregon for the national championship. Forget he has thrown for 200 yards 7 times and 300 yards twice. Obviously he is awful and won't do anything in the NFL.

all guys that run aren't the same. Cam is more comparable to a mix of Freeman and Young.

We're not drafting Newton since we didn't give a thought to signing Vick. By now you people should know we don't go after people with questionable pasts, and newton certainly has one of those.

Cam isn't a convicted felon. Cam has a dad issue. Pro game will likely be good for him and some space.

How many people has Steve Smith suckerpunched on his own team? This illusion Carolina only embraces the squeaky clean isn't 100% accurate.
