Those who want Cam Newton First overall...

I think it depends on what coverage we run. If we stay cover 2/3 shell, then he is wasted here since he is a great cover corner. If we went to a man aggressive scheme like Philly, then he would be a great pick-up. Once we have a coach in place it will be easier to speculate.

Excellent point. If we aren't going to use him like a Darelle Revis there is probably no reason to get him and pay him the big bucks.

We do need to address CB this offseason though.

So what? That means we would get the best player in the draft (Peterson) to play cb or safety and could go qb next year. Rebuilding a franchise isnt a one year thing and we are gonna be picking from the top 10 for a couple years before we will be a true playoff team again

Don't think we will be that great in 2011 but if JR spends the money to bring in a few free agents like a veteran QB we won't be that bad either. We are better than our 1-12 record indicates from a talent point of view. What I feared from a perfect storm point of view happened with injuries, inexperience, and poor quarterback play. We will be middle of the pack next year which means we will get some good picks next year. But we won't be bad for years.

Like it or not we need to be bad for a couple years to get real talent here, yea we could resurface next year and make a playoff run but if we sucked it up for one more year we could get double the talent. example: rams, bucs, falcons, lions We never truly rebuilt after our other 1-15 season we just got lucky with free agency (Stephen Davis, Delhomme)

............... What I mean when I say pure passer is that the defense can take the run away and he can carry a team through the air because that will happen. making all the throws goes into being a pure passer. Its one thing to be able to thread the needle but to be able to go anywhere on the field is another thing

We are not Indy or New Orleans. If Hurney sticks to what he said is the plan, we will continue to have a strong running game. In that scheme the quarterback doesn't have to throw laser beams in between 3 defenders to be successful. He needs to be able to make good throws, spread the field and go downfield. He needs to be elusive and buy time since our O line is suspect and he needs to be able to move the ball effectively.

All things he seems capable of doing. Now if we decide to go west coast and change the scheme, then newton might not be a good quarterback at all for what we want to do. After all the quarterback doesn't play within a vacuum but within a system. It would be nice to know what the system will be before deciding who would fit best. Then again if we went West Coast Clausen would do much better than he is in our system now.

Don't agree. Atlanta went 4-12 post Vick and after they got Ryan went 11-5 the next year and haven't had a losing year since then. If we got Luck or newton we could rebuild right away and sprinkle in a few free agents and be fine.

right on with this. The team needs a lot to top of the line, but a good QB with a good coach will go a LONG way to improving this team... We have good, young talent to build around, it's just a matter of getting the right key pieces to bring that together.

I agree. This team has plenty of talented players to build around but the two pieces we don't have are the hardest to find (HC and QB).

I love Cam Newton, and I'm a late convert. Sure, he might have some issues adjusting to the pro game. Actually, not might, will. However, even the NFL game tends to get a bit simpler when you are 6'6", 250, with a cannon for an arm and giant ham thighs.

It's really going to be up to him to do what it takes to be an elite pro QB just like it is with any other draftee. No doubt, though, he has all the tools. I absolutely believe he can be in Canton someday. If you have any degree of certainty over whether or not that will actually happen, then you must be a lot smarter than I am.

i think we can get a decent corner 2-3 round range. my pick would be the kid out of virgina Ras-I Dowling. he was projected to be a first rounder but had some injuries and his play fell off. but back to the topic at hand, i agree with the poster who was saying it depends on"if you want to take the time to teach cam".

i think we should compare the strengths and weaknesses of the two and who has the most upside.

Luck is our messiah. He is our saviour. He is gonna fix all of this. He is flawless. There's nothing about him at all that needs work. He could start right now in the NFL and have his team as the top seed going into the playoffs. He will be better than Manning and Brady combined!

Plus he has at least 2 years of college experience!

I am going to throw something out there. Folks including myself have said that Vick couldn't learn the West Coast. On offense he was too one dimensional, ready to run, etc. But to hear him tell it, no one really worked with him to teach him what he needed to know. He goes to Philly where they actually taught him how to play and he looks like a world beater.

Why bring it up? Because if we are not inclined or capable of developing an NFL quarterback then Luck is our man. He will likely be successful with minimal coaching. Newton on the other hand will need work learning the pro game but is the most physically talented quarterback to come out in the draft in forever. But if the FO and new coach aren't willing to devote the time and attention to make him great, then he will fail big time.

Frankly it is a good thing we are getting a new staff. With Fox and his staff, it wouldn't have been a choice. We would have taken Luck and hoped he would get it on his own since we couldn't teach him much based on our history developing a quarterback.

Quarterback coach might be the most important position we hire this year. I wonder what Vinny is doing these days???
