Those who want Cam Newton First overall...

Interesting how this running quarterback has a higher passer rating than Luck and has thrown the same number of touchdowns (28). He has also played several ranked teams not 1 like Luck (and lost). He can run as evidenced by his 20 rushing touchdowns as well. But to call him a running quarterback is naive at best.

I dont think he is a pure passer or that he will be, nothing to do with his race I just dont think he will be able to make all the different throws and not make the big mistakes. He might even be better than VY but any way you look at it he is a major risk

I wonder what his rating would be w/o the 20 rush TD's? thats the real question and thats still against soft cover SEC defenses, the pros will be a wake up call just like all the running qbs. Mcnabb wasnt nearly as affective after he stopped running, Vick is a phenomenon

He seems to be a pretty good passer from what I've seen but his other talents have assisted him in teams making it easier for him to look good in this area. But still he does look good and what makes you say he can't make all the throws?

All players are major risks.

I think stating he would be a big risk is overstating the issues. He can obviously make all the throws. The issues will be learning to take snaps under center and the resultant footwork to learn 3, 5 and 7 step drops. He will also need to recognize pro-defenses and make approriate adjustments meaning lots of filmwork and preparation.

The issue seems to me if you want a quarterback who is more NFL ready and has received great coaching from a pro-quarterback/coach then Luck is your man. If you are willing to take the time to develop Newton and teach him what he needs to know instead of tossing him out there to the wolves, then Newton may end up being a better quarterback in the end.

SO for me it isn't high risk so much as how soon do you have to see rewards.

Calling SEC defenses soft coverage is something few can reach for.

Unless he is trying to refer to said defenses having 8-9 in the box.

But in that case the coverage would have to be tighter to keep from getting burned.

But I digress.

"major risk"

Trusting the Panthers front office when it comes to QBs is a "major risk".

And Kurbie tell our fellow Panther fans to stop "grouping all black QBs together" as the next Jamarcus & Akili. Dudes want to sound stupid and say stupid things, but dont want the stigma and image that comes along with that.
