Those who want Cam Newton First overall...

Absolutely he could grow up. That's why he's a risk/reward type of guy. Without those reservations about his maturity I would absolutely want the guy on our team. I mean, given some time to develop his talents to an NFL caliber, he could be extremely dangerous.

If we do draft him, I will be extremely worried, but then also, I would be fairly excited to see if what he could do, and if he could turn into the type of franchise QB we've always wanted.

Same old stereotypes. Wash, rinse, repeat. How mature is the undefeated Heisman Trophy winning QB? He's black you know. I question just how hard he works. He probably never practices hard, just goes out there and beats everybody relying on his "athleticism".

If Newton came here he would have to mature and work hard. otherwise he won't play. Clausen has a ton of problems but desire and hard work aren't two of them. Any quarterback coming in would have to know that there is going to be intense competition especially with a new coach staff who are out to prove their mettle as well. Of course it depends on who we get but I doubt they could pull a Jamarcus Russell here. Even Moore who was criticized for being too laid back in the past worked hard this year once he was named the starter.

I would think Newton or whoever we get would be under insane pressure to work hard and justify the high draft pick. Russell was the aberration not the norm. Even Vince Young made the pro-bowl his rookie year.

that simply 100% does happen in college. Not saying that is the case w/ Cam....but it is a fair question to raise is all.

Not sure if you read my earlier post http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2844721&postcount=173

I still maintain that there are questions about his maturity, and maturity and work ethic tend to go hand-in-hand. Do I know how hard he works comparatively to other guys? No, not at all. Do you? I'd assume not.

We do know there are a lot of not so appealing investigations and allegations surrounding him though and that of course gives rise to the reservations about drafting him. How can you not understand that? Stop chalking it all up to one thing. There's a lot of gray area with Newton, and that's why some people question whether or not to draft him.

i'm telling ya. its a no lose if the Panthers get Luck or Newton. And for the morons who compare Newton to Jamarcus, please read Football for Dummies. Not even close.

The only edge I give to Luck is the coaching and style of offense he has played. That gives him a very very slight advantage.

Newton to me is a taller and faster McNabb. Luck reminds me alot of Aaron Rodgers. I could live with either of those two NFL players on the Panthers and likewise with Cam or Luck.

I at least am not comparing careers, circumstances etc between Russell and Newton. Only thing I raise in comparison is being in position to be a franchise quarterback and not taking advantage of the opportunity because of maturity and work ethic.

How mature is Newton? None of us know, because I doubt any of us actually know him well. The circumstances surrounding his college career however are partially public and one can make assumptions on his level of maturity. Newton will no doubt be in position to become a franchise QB and absolutely is talented enough to be one. All I am saying is it is fair to question his maturity based on what is known about his life outside of football, and Russell's failure is a worst-case scenario for immaturity.

I think it is fair to question it as much as any other player, but circumstances like Cam has been through can also lead to attaining maturity through learning from mistakes. He just has to learn from them and that is up to him. Sure it could be something to take note of, but it is more important that he grows and learns from his mistakes than that he made them in the first place.

He's as big of a gamble as Armanti Edwards if we take him in the first, thats not what we need. Yea he has the potential to be great but we cant put the future of the organization in the hands of a running qb with a one year resume. Luck or Peterson if Luck stays in school

I would be happy with either. People who know far more about football than I do claim that Luck is a can't miss prospect. However, we all know that Cam is a winner. He is tall, accurate, strong and fast. There is probably no comparable QB to him because there has never been someone who has everything. It's more along the lines of the Carmelo Anthony or Lebron James draft. We all know Cam is probably going to decimate the combine/pro day. Thats going to run the hype up, especially if he plays well in the Championship game. I honestly believe we don't lose either way. I would take the chance on Cam because we could have a game changer. A player that revolutionizes the position. However with Luck seems like the player you would lose less nights of sleep over.

Every 1st round QB pick is a gamble. Hell last year Jake Locker was a probably considered the best QB in college football. Now no one mentions his name.

Interesting how this running quarterback has a higher passer rating than Luck and has thrown the same number of touchdowns (28). He has also played several ranked teams not 1 like Luck (and lost). He can run as evidenced by his 20 rushing touchdowns as well. But to call him a running quarterback is naive at best.
