Strength of Schedule Breakdown

Actually sir that was incorrect about the steelers.... That game was a wash in terms of our SoS vs Cincy's.

Cincy also played the Jets.... So if the Jets win they add 1 win we add 0 which is a pickup of one. Had the steelers won they would have added 2 wins, we would have added 1 which is still a pickup of 1.

There were a few of those games today where the outcome did not matter in terms of SoS.

You'd think it'd be a wash, but I decided to put it in the sheet to check.

Prior to those game results...

Panthers - .572

Bengals - .586

(difference of .014)

Had the Steelers won...

Panthers - .574

Bengals - .584

(difference of .010)

Because the Jets won...

Panthers - .570

Bengals - .583

(difference of .013)

So in the end, a difference of one one-hundredth better thanks to the Jets (updated the initial post accordingly).

Everybody clear now?

Yea.... All of that is pretty much irrelevant... There really is no reasonable way for us to catch them... After this week they will have about a 12 game cushion on us.... What you listed comes no where close to closing that cushion

Not that there's any real chance of catching them, but if you want the Broncos SoS to go up, here's what you need.

WEEK 16:

Ravens over Browns (wash for the Bengals, but hurts the Broncos)

That gives both the broncos and us +1 so a net of 0

Seahawks over Bucs (double-whammy; lowers us, increases them)

Same as before, a seahawks victory gives both of us a +1 so it's still a net gain of 0

Jaguars over Redskins

+1 for Broncos

Chiefs over Titans (divisional factor)

Plus 2 for Broncos

Jets over Bears (also helps against the Bengals)

+1 for Broncos

WEEK 17:

Colts over Titans (also on the Bengals)

Wash for Denver since they played both teams

Jets over Bills (wash for the Bengals)

+1

Obviously, you want to cheer for the Broncos against the Texans and Chargers, but if they lose those games their SoS goes up (double whammy for the Chargers game).

The Chargers play the Bengals in week 16. A Chargers win doubles up on the Broncos, but also keeps the Bengals within a game of us. Similar deal when the Ravens and Bengals play in week 17, but a Bengal loss there does double-whammy Cincinnati's SoS.

Colts-Raiders next week hurts the Bengals if the Colts win, but doubles up the Broncos if the Raiders win.

Cardinals-Cowboys in week 16 is a wash in this matchup since it ups their SoS, but also ours. So are the Rams-49ers game in week 16 and the Chiefs-Raiders, Rams-Seahawks, 49ers-Cardinals and Texans-Jaguars games in week 17 because in each of those games, both teams have played the Broncos.

Oy :sosp:

So all that is only a gain of 5 wins on the Broncos which is not even half of what we need....

Bottom line just root for Denver to win a game..... All that other stuff does not matter when it comes to SoS with Denver

You should not use % which has rounding errors..... Either way they have +1 wins on us. Either they had 131 and us 128, or them 132 and us 129....Either way their opponets won 3 more games than us.

There's definitely no catching them. We can only make it closer (which means nothing).

Bottom Line: Cheer for them against the Texans next week.

It made sense to somebody, I guess.

The NFL uses head-to-head in its other tiebreakers. Why they left it out of this one is beyond me.

I'm trying to recall the last time it had to be applied though. Likely I'll have to look it up. In most years, there's been one team that's had the worst record, and one alone.

Can't use head to head when you have the possibility that you have multiple teams involved in the tie breaker, who may not have all played one another... It would obviously work in certain instances, but there are enough instances yearly that it's better not to include H2H among the determination factors...

how is it ever better to exclude a factor?

all you have to say is "in the event of a tie between only two teams, head to head is used."

viola.

anyway whatever. Broncos have a decent chance of winning one this week.

Updating today (Bengals mathematically eliminated, but I'm still tracking for the heck of it).

At the beginning of the day...

- Panthers: .575

- Bengals: .586

Week 16 Results:

Cowboys over Cardinals - negative result, but hysterically funny :D

Jets over Bears - also negative, heck of a game though

Dolphins over Lions - absolutely nothing went our way in the early going :sosp:

Morning results narrowed the gap significantly...

- Panthers: .576

- Bengals: .579

(don't panic, though)

The rest of the slate...

Colts over Raiders - happening now

Packers over Giants - happening now

Seahawks over Bucs - happening now

Saints over Falcons - tomorrow

And of course, there's the Denver-Houston game.
