I'm not totally sold on the whole "gotta get Luck" thing - or newton, or any stud QB for that matter.

For every "good" QB taken as #1 overall, there are just as many QB failures taken in the 1st rounds - some as #1 overall.

You don't have to get a big name QB to have a successful team - you just need someone that can evaluate the talent and then develop it.

ahhh some non - 1st rounders that turned out pretty good

Tom Brady = 6th round pick

Drew breeze = 2nd round pick

Steve Young - supplemental draft

Montana = 3rd round pick

Dan Fouts = 3rd round pick

so how bout TJ Yates, Stephen Garcia, Greg McElroy for instance - trade down to gain some picks and take a mid level QB.

Garcia is a junior .. one more year

Love the avatar. And I agree that the risk for first round QBs is high. However, I would add that the vast majority of QBs taken after the first round are never heard from again. Frankly, I don't know where they come from. I have thought that Yates will be good if put in the right situation. However, until we get a good OC, OL, WRs, and QB coach, he would fail here.

Davis83,

NFL talent evaluators have proven time and time again that they struggle to identify what will actually make a good quarterback. In some ways they get to wrapped up in the measurables when for this position in particular things you cannot slap a number on are the most important aspects.

Tom Brady never would have been a 6th round pick if people had known how hard he would work, how smart he is, and how great his ability to motivate and lead even seasoned veterans would be as a young player.

Kral,

Agree totally - point I was trying to get to was this. There is an equal amount of risk involved whether you draft someone #1 over all - or - trade that pick for some additional picks and then take the best available. I feel that you improve your odds by trading the #1 pick to get more chances.

You may be 1 player away from a "great" team - but we are far from being a great team. Therefore I am not sold on the "Gotta have .....insert name" rationale.

We need many picks to improve the odds of getting a few really good players.

MHS831 - thanks, I have the sexiest football player avatar that I've seen on this site.
