What Veteran QB? give me a name

I'll have to look to see who's available. I'm not strecthing for a big name. Hell, before 2003 few people knew who Jake was. I wouldn't even mind a trade as long as the deal is reasonable. Just to throw one name out there for trade would be Kolb since Vick has secured that job.

Even if we do end up with Luck and Harbaugh I would still like to have a vet FA available to take the pressure off. Harbaugh being the HC would make the transition to the system easier for Luck but there is still adjustment to the speed of the game and the general way things look here vs college.

A solid vet FA on a short contract would be able to enter into the season / preseason as the presumptive starter and let Luck make whatever transitions he needs to make at his own pace rather than under fire / running for his life.

He may be the best prospect in a decade and is the most pro ready by far but that doesn't mean under any circumstances it's intelligent to go into a season with an all-rookie-wonder-squad at QB and expect miracles. Good players get ruined this way. Just once I'd like to see us handle the QB position intelligently.

I'm not a Luck opponent, but if he doesn't come out I'd take a long hard look at Alex Smith or Carson Palmer. I'm sure neither of them would cost too much.

palmer is most likely going back to Cincy. Alex Smith... why do we need Smith, we have a younger version with Clausen.

McNabb may get cut but it's hard to tell what he wants and what his agent wants. In an ideal situation, he is the FA QB that will be best available. It's a good thing nobody else will be looking for a QB :)

Ultimately Matt Moore may end up being the best FA available. =P

I would rather have Jimmy Clausen start over Alex Smith

Based on what? Smith has been in a shitty situation in SF his entire career. He's still managed a 49/52 TD/INT, ratio which isn't terrible. I'm not saying go out and trade a 4th rounder for the guy, but if he's cut why not give him a look? Clausen has shown absolutely nothing. I never liked the pick and I still don't.

Have you seen Alex Smith play?

I've got Sunday ticket, so yes, I've seen pretty much everyone in the league play for the last 10 years. He's not as bad as SF fans would have you believe. It's hard to have success when you've had head coaches named Mike Singletary and Mike Nolan. And how many different OCs has he had in his time with SF? He could very well be the next David Carr, but he could also finally carve out a career for himself.

McNabb is winding his career down. I'm not sure there's a point in acquiring him.

You still didn't answer my question either.

Alex Smith sucks.

I think McNabb on a 2 year deal to provide early guidance and an easy transition into the starting role for whoever we draft (even Luck) would be a solid idea.

McNabb is not a bad QB by any stretch and should have enough gas left in the tank to start while the young QB learns then provide mentoring and help him learn from the bench after transitioning out of the starting role.

    • Agreed on the last part. They can’t afford to lose all these games with Martin and Perets.
    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
