Andrew Luck News & Updates

I can't wait for a year from now when we all realize Luck is a bust and is concussion prone. If we want to build a running team, why has more consideration not gone to Cam Newton. How can any defense deal with Stewart, Goodman, Williams, and Newton? I'm sorry but i'd rather take an all-round great football player, from the most difficult conference than a guy who can throw, can't run.

First off, Cam Newton's great runs will NOT work as well as they did in college. the NFL is faster than college and Newton isnt as fast or small as Vick so he should be easier to catch. As for Luck not being able to run, watch again, he can run, he just passes first, runs as a last resort.

Goodman.

i know it's been said, but...who??? hahaha.

Newton is considered more of a project at the qb position, that's why not as much attention has been paid to him. The dual threat QB type is awesome but in practice it doesn't work as well. If Newton is going to be successful at the NFL level it *will* be due to his arm.

agreed on all points. Newton's considered a project and a dual threat QB is great to watch and sells tickets, but it doesnt work in the NFL. it works for Vick because of his size and speed, but Newton's size should make it easier for a linebacker to catch him.

I'm not getting into any arguments over conference strength...but to think that cam newton can do anything resembling what he has done at auburn is obsurd. Linebackers in the NFL are as fast as safeties in college and just as big as cam...aka his run option plays won't work as well. Secondly, he can't snap under center very well. This limits his ability to read the defense while dropping back. He has yet had the responsibility of recognizing and identifying complex defenses becuase the majority of plays auburn runs depends completely on the defensive ends. Cam may develop into a good qb, but he won't last half a season if he takes a beating from an NFL defense.

yep, all those will be problems that Carolina would have to fix if Newton came here. he would have to learn to take snaps under center (he did it rarely at Auburn) and he will have to learn to read an NFL defense instead of read it quickly and either throw and run and like JerryRich and I have said, linebackers are faster and bigger in the pros.

I heard Luck wasn't too interested in coming to Carolina, that he would rather stay with Harbaugh at Stanford. If it meant getting Luck, I would consider hiring Harbaugh.

I have researched our tendencies and I am afraid that Carolina/Richardson will make some of the same mistakes they have made in the past:

1) Pride - Carolina/Hurney has mistakenly taken to long trying to allow players to develop, such as a certain USC WR that is no longer with the team. Hurney doesn't like admitting draft mistakes (and he makes a few). Drafting Armani Edwards and giving a 2nd round pick for him was a mistake. Clausen will make a good back-up, but thinking he is starting/franchise QB material is a mistake. Luck would be 'that' guy', but Hurney's pride and reluctance to admit making a msitake might prevent Carolina from drafting Luck.

2) Going Cheap: Richardson fired his two sons and then went 'cheap', getting rid of the big $$s and older players for younger, cheaper talent. A big concenr in Carolina is that Carolina will continue to 'go cheap'. If no Rookie Salary Cap is in place by the start of the draft, Richardson may not be willing to fork over the cash for a number one draft pick, no matter how good he is, and will trade the pick.

3) Needed extra Draft Picks: Carolina has no 2nd round draft pick as a result of gambling on Armani Edwards, a college QB, becoming a PR...which until now appears to be a complete BUST since he can't even get on the field. Carolina could seek to trade the #1 pick for more picks, especially if no Rookie salary CAP is in place. If one is, the pick becomes all that more valuable and desireable for a trade.

I hope Carolina does not trade the pick. If they nee extra picks I suggest:

1) Trading Tony Pike, Armani Edwards (if anyone wants him), and one of our 3 stud RBs. Depending on DW's status, I would trade Goodson.

2) I would also seek to trade Steve Smith.

- He is 31 yo, fruit dying on the vine in Carolina

- His trade value is only going to continue to decline

- There won't be much of a change in his play as long as we have no WRs stepping up and taking the double-coverage off him AND / OR we can't get a QB who can get the ball to the WRs.

- As much as I hate the thought of losing him, I wouldn't mind seeing Smitty - after all he has done.meant to the team - finish out somewhere closer to making it to the SB. (I still want him retiring as a Carolina Panther, though!)

JR, great analysis of Cam. He is a Michael Vick Wanna-be. Vick put butts in the seats, but he has never won anything. POCKET PASSERS like Manning and Brady win championships. He's a BUST waiting to happen.

no one has come close to verifying that luck isn't interested in coming here. it's all conjecture.

I have researched our tendencies and I am afraid that Carolina/Richardson will make some of the same mistakes they have made in the past:

i agree this might be a problem. hopefully the new coach will put his foot down.

2) Going Cheap: Richardson fired his two sons and then went 'cheap', getting rid of the big $$s and older players for younger, cheaper talent. A big concenr in Carolina is that Carolina will continue to 'go cheap'. this isn't as big of a concern as you or others make it out to be and this certainly isn't a trend. it was this year that they went cheap. thats it. no other year have they shown a tendency to be "cheap".

If one is, the pick becomes all that more valuable and desireable for a trade.

we will still end up with about 10 draft picks without trading for any because of the comp picks that will be coming our way.

I hope Carolina does not trade the pick. If they nee extra picks I suggest:

1) Trading Tony Pike, Armani Edwards (if anyone wants him), and one of our 3 stud RBs. Depending on DW's status, I would trade Goodson.

i agree that i don't want the panthers to trade the pick away. pike won't get us anything, though. i also think trading any of the RBs will be a big mistake. we'll have a new QB one way or the other ands we'll have toi be able to consistently and effectively run the ball 35 times a game and the season will be expanding to 18 games. we'll need all the help in the run game we can get. rather than trading away one of our few areas of strength we need to be building other areas to that level.

2) I would also seek to trade Steve Smith.

- He is 31 yo, fruit dying on the vine in Carolina

- His trade value is only going to continue to decline

- There won't be much of a change in his play as long as we have no WRs stepping up and taking the double-coverage off him AND / OR we can't get a QB who can get the ball to the WRs.

i agree about trading smith for a pick, but i would package that pick together with another late rounder to get an experienced WR. if we trade away smith it should only be to upgrade there.

provided we get luck i would trade clausen away for a pick. just like smith, i would package him with another late rounder but use that to move up into the 2nd round.

hahaha, now i dont think he's a bust (if he learns how to pass), but i dont think he's what people think. People think he's going to come in and play great, but i cant see that. Even Luck will struggle, but Newton (in my book) could struggle worse. I dont see him doing what he did in college because the NFL is too fast. Jake Locker is a better pick (in my mind) than Newton. Newton could be good after backing up a year.

honestly, i only see a limited number of teams trading for Clausen and many of them wont trade him for anything less than a 4th or 5th round pick. i COULD see Washington trade their first or 2nd round pick for Clausen, BUT another player would have to be involved like maybe Mike Goodson (then it would be a 2nd round pick going to Carolina) or Stewart/Williams (then it would likely be a first rounder).

Lol... reading through the Broncos MB they seem split on Luck vs Defense. Someone posted this and I thought it was funny

Luck threads are the worst threads on the entire board. I get it. He is wonderful. He is amazing. He is a can't miss. His nuts glow gold. But we don't need him. DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE!
:smilielol5:

What's also funny is how majority of the bengals board is still behind Carson even though he;s been stinking it up and blames his struggles on TO.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
