Ron Meeks Is New D-Coordinator

Exactly! Thank you for being the voice of reason! Meeks hit the jackpot with the talent we have even without peppers. I will still say we need more pass rush from the front line (can address in the draft) and maybe an upgrade at OLB and we can run the Tampa 2 the way it was meant to be ran.

Look everyone is on the jock of the 3-4 defense right now, just like they were on the TAMPA 2 just a couple years ago. We go out and kick ass with the Tampa 2 and watch how many teams go back to it next offseason. Its a copy cat league.

Meeks just managed Dungy's defense. He's probably going to be a caretaker here as well. I really doubt we switch to the cover 2.

Anyway, the cover 2 doesn't WANT large run stuffing DTs, it wants small, fast ones. If you switch it up to bigger, slower run stuffers we will get eaten in the passing game by leaving our dbacks in coverage forever.

I'm not happy. Seems like more of the same to me.

I have a question I know no one can answer, but.....

I wonder who was the most instrumental in bringing in Meeks?

Fox, Hurney or The Richardson's.

I, actually, can answer that for you. The response would come from Hurney, and it would go like this....

"John Fox, (whichever Richardson is running things), and I all got together and discussed the pro's and con's of each guy we were interested in. And in the end, Ron Meeks was the guy who we thought would help this franchise the most."

Peppers is an all around DE. Freeney is a pure speed rusher.

Again, it all depends on who is expected to do the adapting.

which I think it's crap if "playing the run" is how Peppers thinks he's being held back.

I like the hire. Not first choice, but up there. Experienced in what we need. No way John Fox teams let our run D get as bad as theirs, and we already have better one-gap run stoppers.

Past that, he's the right guy to go fix the secondary. Our pass D blew so bad last year at the end.

And sure, he's zone. Hey, kids, name me one team in the league that's all about man coverage. This is the NFL, not Florida playing against Vandy. You don't have the talent at this level to sit there and play man on people. No one does.

dont know if this has been posted or not but here are some stats.

From a statistics standpoint, Meeks' defenses produced mixed results. His defenses ranked:

No. 11 or better in total yards allowed five times, including No. 11 in 2008 and No. 3 in '07.

No. 7 or better in fewest points allowed five times, including No. 7 in '08 and No. 1 in '07.

No. 6 or better in fewest passing yards six times, including No. 6 in '08 and No. 2 the previous two seasons. The '08 pass defense allowed just six touchdown passes, the fewest in the league since it expanded to a 16-game schedule in 1978.

Tied for No. 20 or worse in rushing yards allowed five times, including No. 24 in '08 and last in the NFL in '06.

Ok, I just read through most of the thread, and have to admit that Mad hatter must have had blinders on all season if he thinks that this past year was a great success. I tend to agree with Fiz in this little argument. We were 12-4 a good record, but we had some pretty terrible play calling on both sides of the ball, and Otah and Dewill singlehandedly got us to the playoffs. The worst part of our record is that it buys Fox a few more years. It is what it is. And I am very dissapointed in this Meeks hire, we had the chance to go out an get a young up and coming position coach and give himself a chance to prove he belongs, but instead we went and got someone who has had the DC job and done little with it. He had the luxury of most always playing with the lead and not having to defend the run. I'll give him a chance to prove me wrong before I write him off but I think its a pretty lame hire, more of the same conservative garbage from hurney

Some people need to backup a sec. His defense in indy was a result of what the team needed, not what Meeks particularly wanted. You can say cover 2 lineman/LBs/DBs are this or that, but no one knows if changing to a cover 2 is even on the table. If we are changing then at very least we know we have the perfect MLB and run stuffing SS. It's not like anyone strictly runs a cover 2 and nothing else. Hell, the blend of Fox and Meeks could create a Carolina2 defense that everyone else is trying to mimic. Don't knock him until you give him a chance.

Besides saying I agree or disagree, I'd like to point out...

First, that was the goal in risking 2 first round picks, in hopes of our running game being dominate. Otah.. if you remember was apart of that. DWill came through, but also Stewart as well.

Second, our receivers put up good numbers, and our offense has been better than in recent years.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But when you say, "our running game carried us".. Well no sh*t, that was clearly the expectation coming into this year. You aren't pointing out anything but the game plan we had coming into this year.

And both Smitty and Moose had good numbers for #1 and #2. I have to say they did their part and contributed to our running game.

Unfortunately, the 2 things that ended our season early was our defense and Jake.

Both of which could get better (with our new QB coach helping Jake, yes, it's in the realm of possibility) and perhaps a new staff on the defense can help the D. (again, in the realm of possibility)

Just saying..

And I have to agree. Noone has any idea what is going to happen. You're jumping extremely far with all these posts claiming this is going to happen or that.

What is funny is this...

Trgo must go! threads are everywhere.

Trgo leaves.

Fox meddles with Trgo, Fox must go! threads everywhere

Meeks comes in.. Cover 2 defense!

Well, what just happened to Fox's defense and the puppet known as D-Coord?

Just a curious observation..............

I didnt mean to sell Moose or Smitty Short they did have great years despite who was throwing them the ball. I love having those two lining up at wideout. I am interested to see what kind of progress Jake makes with a new coach. I'm not writing off Meeks, I just think we could have done a lot better with a young energetic up and coming coach. That being said I hope he can improve on what the Turd left him (plenty of talent terrible coaching) I don't see Jake changing much which means he will cough up at least 1 or 2 costly TO's a game, and the pressure will be on Meeks to bail him out hopefully hes up to the task
