Let's Accept Some Basic Truths

We're the worst team in the league. They're better than us this year. They won one of the toughest divisions in the NFL last season. They beat us head to head. But sure, we're better off because "they're the Bengals".

Worst this year, yes. But teams like the Bengals, Raiders and Lions make a regular thing of it.

History didn't begin in the NFL two years ago.

Basic truth anyone that would trade a future second rounder for a current 3rd round is a dumb

anyone who would trade their future second rounder for a projected 7th round player is dumb

anyone who would trade their future second round pick for a player you plan on changing into a position it has never played and plays in a division 2 school is plain dumb.

anyone who chooses to trade away their future second round pick in a upcoming season where you just released or traded all your key vets and didn't sign any free agents to improve the team is dumb.

What sucks this year is not only are we bad but we are bad and don't even have our second round pick for next year because of Armanti Edwards, A player that was a division two quarter back that we are trying to make a wide reciever, he was a projected seventh rounder that we not only picked up in the third round but traded our future 2nd round pick for a project player. We planned on being bad this year and thats fine, I don't mind rebuilding but if we are going to rebuild and suck we should keep all of our draft picks so we will be able to rebuild.

Im also currious, how many times has these kind of projects actually been succesful and who has been a qb and has succesfully been converted into a WR? I know Randel El and Matt Jones both were Qbs in college and were decent WRs but other than those two I couldn't name anyone else.

Probably hasn't been tried very often. I do remember a player for the Cardinals named Roy Green who was drafted in the 4th round as a cornerback and kick returner and coverted to WR. A very good WR at that.

Going from CB to WR is easier than QB to WR. And I'm sure quite a few CB also played WR in high school. He could have been one of them

True, the Bengals have been to more Super Bowls than we have.

they have been to 2 superbowls ('81 and '88). won none. overall record of 284-370-2. they've had 2 winning seasons since the panthers came into the league. their owner/gm is a joke.

overall panthers>>bengals.

Somethings I hope most can accept as the basis of discussions around here.

1. Fox is gone: Really hope there's no debate here.

2. The trade for Edwards was a gamble gone bad (though we won't know for sure for another couple of years), not proof that Hurney can't find talent: Marty's a gambler. Gamblers will sometimes lose...BAD. I've found Hurney an above average but in no way great talent scout.

Looks like he rolled snake eyes on this one (but we won't know for sure for another couple of years), but when he goes with safer, solider choices, he's tended to do well.

3. Trading a first for Brown and Goodson was basically a gamble that resulted in a push: Brown has a good chance at being solid at the DE position and a puncher's chance at being good at the DE position.

Goodson, provided he learns how to block and hold onto the football, could be a key piece to the team.

Having these two players is worth a first, but isn't something anyone would put at the top of their resume. A "meh" trade if you will.

4. Luck will be the pick if he declares and we have the #1 pick: Clausen has his own destiny in his hands. If he can pull it together, we win a couple and draft 2nd or 3rd, Pickles is our QB of the future. If he doesn't, we draft 1st and take Luck. Pretty simple really.

5. We are two good drafts and a handful of FA's away from being a perennial playoff team: With the assumption we take Luck or Clausen pans out to be a better than average QB, all we need is a penetrating DT, a WR a G (or maybe a RT or LT and a line shift) to be a very, very good team.

The supporting cast is there (and is young). We just need a few bright spots. Like Fiz said, we're more talented than the Petrino era Falcons were.

1. Am sure he is gone.

2. The trade for Edwards can't even be judged upon. Anybody who thinks it can be, has zero concept of a project.

3. Brown hasn't been the pass rusher many (even I) have hoped, but not about to rule on him until his 3rd year. (3 years is the soonest any draft should really be judged). Goodson, was a great part of that trade. He has great heart, with good skills. He'll continue to be a part of the the Panthers offense in the future.

4. Luck is what it is. We'll either be there to draft him, or we won't.

5. I don't think we are 2 drafts away from being a playoff team. I believe this team can bounce back and make the playoffs if it gets solid play from it's o-line (we have the talent). We need to improve the DT position, and our defensive line should improve enough that our defense could be dominate if our offense could sustain drives, and put some points on the board.

Something that hasn't been mentioned. Our special teams is the best we've had in years! Woohoo!

Deangelo Williams 1st round

Jonathon Stewart 1st round

The running back position does not warrant (read shouldn't) this kind of draft pick position in so short a time.

For a team that puts so much priority on the run, and had problems getting good running backs, no it's not.

I'll admit that I was surprised that the Panthers went running back with their first pick in that draft, but they backed it up, by getting the best mauling tackle in the same draft. They won that draft regardless of the cost that you think is to high.

Yes, it sucks that the tackle has been injured, and hasn't played this season. But, injuries are a fact of line in the NFL. He should still be able to come back from the injury. Even if he doesn't, the immediate impact he made on the running game was huge. That cannot be argued.

Amazing how people sit and argue how good or bad a draft was based upon injury.
