WoW - Cataclysm

never played it but just a question

You mean questions... I'll answer, sure...

so you try to level up your characters?

That's certainly part of it. But that's not everything....

The thing about WoW, is that it is fairly vast in terms of what you can do. It's not JUST about leveling.

You can attain "Achievements" for doing certain things. For example, if you complete a set number of quests in each and every area in the world, you get the "Loremaster" achievement. If you explore every place on the world maps, you get the "Explorer" achievement. Achievements are mostly bragging rights, but they also can give you special titles, or unique riding mounts, or other aesthetic updates for your character.

Oh... and that's another aspect to the game. Aesthetics... they play a huge part of why people play. Getting your characters to look different or behave differently is highly sought after (the "unique snowflake effect", as I like to call it).

For example, there is an Axe you could get as part of a special event for the release of the last expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. It's called an Arcanite Ripper. It's not only a weapon, but it's an actual guitar, which when you click on it, turns you into Undead, and plays some screeching metal sounds and shows your character playing it like a guitar.

You pay a subscription because it takes money to maintain the servers and support staff. It's not like a regular game where you pay for the content and that's it - they're constantly adding new content and tweaking the game. All MMOs are like that(ones worth playing at least).

Guild Wars was my favorite competitive mmo type game I ever played.

I played WoW until I got to BC and just gave up. It takes to much time to get to where I could really start playing the game the way I wanted.

While the expansion is great, and right now I have time (unemployed) to play, I really worry about when I get a job. I just don't think I can or will feel like putting in the hours needed on this game, especially since the difficulty jumped quite a bit from the last expansion. Just logging in to do your random dungeon to get valor points could take hours, and that's insane.

Sometimes I feel bad playing the game too, it's just hard to kick the habit lol. Sometimes I get off, not really happy I'm playing again, but I'm back on in a few days.

I think the current dungeon difficulty is because there is a huge leap in stats from Wrath gear to Cata gear. The Cata Greens are often better than the highest raiding Tier gear from Wrath.

Blizzard made this leap in gear scale much greater as compared with other expansions. Thus people are using dungeons to level, and are relying on their old outdated gear to get them through, when it is far inferior to the greens that are being rewarded for questing or stuff you can get off the AH.

Example:

A buddy of mine has a 72 rogue that he stopped playing right before Wrath, in lieu of playing a Death Knight and a Paladin. He just started playing him again for the hell of it.

We used to run Molten Core and Blackwing Lair back in vanilla WoW. he had several pieces of T2 gear on that Rogue from Blackwing Lair.

He JUST replaced the Tier 2 bracers with a quest reward from a Wrath quest.

Many of the Tier 3 to 5 items from Burning Crusade were good through the entire leveling process in Wrath, and some were good well into raiding too.

This longevity doesn't exist as well for Cataclysm.

Another Example:

My Death Knight is 83. He's in all Green Cata gear and a couple blues. He has almost 80k HP in Blood Spec. Prior to Cata, he had 22k in Blood spec.

My 77 Warlock in all Tier 3 gear had 15k HP. With Cata greens, at level 77, he's got almost 40k.

Honestly, if I were to run a dungeon right now, and everyone in the group wasn't at at least 50k HP, I'd bail, cause with that lack of HP is going to come a lack of attack power, crit, dodge, and every other stat that these encounters are designed for.

I'm gonna ****** the trilogy and new expansion up when they go on sale and give them a try.

I'm not sure how active the pvp in the game is anymore but the learning curve is kind of steep (not that bad really with the resources around the net) and I never really played it for the PvE.
