Hurney report card

Before evaluating our GM, answer these questions:

1. Would you trade Armanti Edwards and Jimmy Clausen to New England for the second rounder (probably the 33rd overall pick) we sent them for the right to draft Edwards?

2. Overall, Hurney & Co. drafted players that dropped significantly, according to draft experts (Clausen, Norwood, Hardy, Pike) . In general, were we foolish for taking these players these so many teams passed over?

3. Have the panthers shown an inability in recent years of being able to draft a DT or sign one in free agency? (draft- Hayden, Ellison, Irvin; free agency: Tank, Louis Leonard, Ed Johnson)

4. Would you rather have our sixth round picks (Hardy, Pike, and Gettis) more than our top three picks (Clausen, Lafell, Edwards)?

If you answered "yes" to these questions, you may have identified a key problem area in the Panther organization and a reason that this draft, the most important in Panther history, has contributed to the lack of success this season.

NOW, how is Hurney doing?

I think he is much better at drafting than bringing in free agents...which is scary. I think hurney does a good job but has made some bonehead moves the past few years...everything from the peppers fiasco (not trading him), to delhomme (huge money), to draft day trades (right now the Everette brown trade was worse than the Edwards trade). And we are still suffering for these moves. My biggest thing is we should never trade away first round picks ever again. These have generally turned into core players and right now we are missing two core players because of the lack of a 1st the past two drafts. I know we aren't two players away from being good but imagine if we had one this year (jared odrick or dez Bryant) or the year before (ziggy hood or hakim nicks). Those could have filled huge holes and added to our growing core of talented players.

So because...

1. We drafted a very strong DE prospect and potential WR in the 6th round along with a potential WR, QB, and then a project playmaker in the 2nd + 3rd

2. A bunch of glorified weathermen that are doing guess work are down on players that are a part of a 1-win team

3. Haven't had the best Luck (cwutididthar?) with trying to clog up that DT spot (since, you know, the GM sets the depth chart)

4. Traded the 2nd round pick, which according to the Crystal Ball of Hindsight, that would've been #33 (and certainly, everybody knew it was going to be #33!), instead of scooping up Mardy Gilyard.

...you want us to say how Hurney is doing?

He's doing a lot better than a bunch of bi-polar fans would think :)

I expect a list of current GMs in the NFL who have never made questionable decisions to try and strengthen the argument that's being implied, but since we know that won't happen (because such a list doesn't exist), I think it's safe to assume that this is yet another finger pointing thread.

When did the Huddle turn into Faux News?

So you think anyone who questions the decisions of the GM is out of line because other GMs have also made questionable decisions? You think the GM has nothing to do with the depth chart? Are you the supreme power who determines that threads cannot be about finger pointing, all while responding in a finger-pointing fashion? I expect the Huddle has not turned into Faux news because it was never FOR news. It even accomodates hypocritical, sarcastic views from those who cannot ignore posts that do not fall within their self-imposed and created guidelines. You are a mental midget.

NOW, how is Hurney doing?

College Scouting Director, Don Gregory, is the real genius in the front office. In my opinion, Hurney simply is the figurehead and has the final say.

To answer your questions:

1) Hell no. Clausen is a first round talent and Edwards is a project. Both are rookies and are going to take time (and quite frankly a better environment) in order to flourish.

2) No again. Clausen is our starting QB. Hardy has already contributed on STs and Defence. Pike and Norwood are both rookies with plenty of time to develop. If in three years time neither one has shown any progress, then we'll discuss this question.

3) Yes, this has been a problem. One I'm confident he will rectify in the upcoming off season.

4) No. Clausen and LaFell are outperforming Pike and Gettis already. Hardy has produced more than Edwards, but again they're both still very young. If anything this highlights just how well we draft - those are six talented players all still with the team.

In summary, I think Hurney and the Front Office do a very good job of acquiring talent. This franchise simply needs a competent Head Coach to take advantage of it.

No, I think that anyone who questions the decision making of the GM and does so in hindsight with only the negatives as a perspective of analysis without taking into account that he relys on a scouting staff to accrue information on players is an idiot.

In his time with the Panthers Id give Hurney a solid B and maybe a B+.

I agree that he has been pretty solid, but by his own admission, this was the most important draft in Panther history. I hear people trashing the players, but not the reason they are here so much. If people wanted immediate results from rookies, then blame the front office who didn't bring in productive rookies when we had to have them to compete. The top end of the draft was crucial, and Hurney-as of right now-- is to blame more than the players. I am not a Hurney-hater, but to trash a rookie QB and a small college former QB turned WR because they did not instantly produce is wrong. They were not first rounders. But many people trash the players and not the guy who traded away the first round picks for two years for an often injured OT, a smallish DE setting up the need to have an instantly-productive draft (along with other variables). In essence, his draft trades have not panned out, and the refusal to (re) sign free agents was magnified by the fact that for three years, we have not replaced our core (Stewart, Otah, Brown). Two had injury histories that have lingered to the present, one was an undersized pass rusher from a system that historically sends DE busts to the NFL. Hurney deserves as much criticism as anyone lately, and lately is all that really matters.

Defensive draft picks, I would give him a b+ or an A-. For offensive draft picks, a C- or D+ and its only that high because of Williams and Stewart. Our two highest receiver picks have been Colbert and Jarrett, and both of those have failed miserably. Jury is still out on Lafell and Gettis, but so far those look good. The failure to get a solid QB either by draft or free agency is a major failure.
