OffSeason moves

The season is over as we know it and we all know about this pending lockout. Let's play GM, what would you do assuming no lockout? All my buddies get up every sunday at the local bar and talk football. An interesting subject came up yesterday, I had a guy say that we should trade S. Smith while he still has value. Being that Smitty is my favorite player in the history of the Panthers, I immediately objected but what would you do. I hear this talk about Luck, what if he doesn't come out? I am actually liking this Cam Newton kid but we will see. A really big need is a run stopping big blog of a DT. If we can get that push in the middle, I think our line improves a little. No big needs on D right now, a few tweeks maybe. With Offense, I would sign D Will back. I would use Goodson as trade bait. I don't know, I am just rambling but what is the most obvious need for us right now?

1) I don't want Cam Newton, I think he is goofy as Hell and will not succeed in the NFL. If Luck doesn't work out, we need to trade down for more picks, and just pick up best available (because we can improve in every position, except RB).

2) I would love to see about 3 or 4 stud free agents that still have some tread on their tires come in (we'll have the cap space for it).

3) We need a new talent evaluator for the Top Cats. Maybe we can get the guy for the Storm Squad to fill this job?

1) Acquire a veteran quarterback, either through free agency or a trade. It's essential to have one whether or not we win the Luck sweepstakes; we need someone who can start if necessary, and who can mentor the young QBs (Clausen and, if we get him, Luck.)

2) Draft/trade for an offensive line. Before this season we'd bring a half dozen line prospects into camp and work them all out. It's why we always had depth and were known for producing top-ten O-lines. We need to return to this.

3) Draft/trade for a defensive line. Our secondary and linebackers will look phenomenal if we could get some pressure up the middle on a consistent basis.

4) Trade any one of Connor, Anderson, or Davis, and any one of Goodson, Sutton, or Stewart.

5) Draft Andrew Luck

6) Win the superbowl :)

hire harbaugh (or some young aggressive and progressive minded coach)

lock up beason, williams, kalil, davis (for cheap), anderson, charles johnson

pick up 2 best DTs in FA (much better options there than in the draft)

pick up best free agent OG in the market

draft luck (or cam if luck isn't an option...of course this would also eliminate harbaugh as HC)

trade clausen and another late pick to get back into the 2nd round

draft BPA for 2nd and 3rd rounds (preferably a CB)

trade all non-comp picks after the 3rd round for vet depth where needed

pick up experieinced and smart vet QB to be extra set of eyes and to help mentor young QB

consider trading smith for a younger model

get a kicker who can do both FGs and KOs

If Luck is not there, there will not be a team willing to trade anything of value to move up to #1.

To answer your question about Smitty.

If the right deal came along, the Panthers would be crazy not to deal him. He is an awesome talent, but he is on the decline. Let's face it, each year takes a gear out of smitty's speed and once Smitty loses his quickness, Smitty loses his game.

I think that it is painfully obvious this year

Let's look at what we have first...

We will more than likely have the 1st pick overall. The first 3rd rounder and a comp 3rd rounder (Peppers)...then on from there.

IF LUCK comes out early, you obviously pick him. Trade JStewart for hopefully a 2nd (look for teams with multiple 1/2 rd picks hurting at RB). Package the traded received 2nd with the 65th pick (3rd) and move up, IF YOU HAVE TO, to get a stud WR or DT. There are a ton of great WRs talents coming out. But whichever you do not get...DT or WR...you will have to get through free agency. I think a stud DT is more critical in that scenario simply because WRs, whether you want to believe it or not, are a dime a dozen. The problem is getting guys to fit your system. Problem is...our system sucks donkey balls for any sort of passing game. John Fox hasn't come to terms with that yet.

IF Luck does NOT come out...try like crazy to trade out of that 1st spot. That will only become possible post-combine if someone blows everything up. Might be AJ Green, but so scary picking a WR in the 1st. Don't want to become Detroit v2.0, BUT they hit a homerun with Megatron. Hope they maintain the draft order if there's a lockout and we get another 1st overall the following year (doubtful)
