Poll: Should Panthers take Luck in NFL draft?

This poll sucks, are the people at the CO that stupid? How about 'No, explore free agency options'?

Everybody knows Clausen sucks. Doesn't mean that the only other answer to QB is the draft. You could even have 'No, draft a QB in the 2nd round'.

Every single time I see one of their polls it has these restricted answers.

I suppose all you need to do is look at the top teams in the league--ALL of them have a stud QB. Colts, Pats, Steelers, Ravens, Jets, Chargers, Saints, Bucs, Falcons, Packers, Giants--good teams that struggle due to poor qb play: Panthers, Titans, Vikings, Cardinals, etc. I suppose you have to ask, is LUCK potentially a bust? Look at recent (last 12 years or so) PAC 10 QBs drafted in the first round (going from memory): Joey Harrington, Matt Leinart, Kyle Boller, Carson Palmer, Mark Sanchez, Marques Tuiasosopo, Aaron Rodgers, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf.

This offseason, Richardson essentially chose a specific path for the Panthers. Through his budget, he basically said that the best way forward for the Panthers was to completely stamp out their financial problems, and to hell with this season if it suffers for it.

I do not believe that Richardson will now reverse the psychology behind the 2010 decision, regardless of the outcome of the owner's meetings and the yet-resolved CBA. The Panthers will return to the NFL being the team with an economic position and the bargaining power that goes with that to protect.

Now, if the new CBA puts a meaningful CAP on rookie salaries, then we could talk about Luck being possibly selected with the first overall pick, which also hinges on us not winning another game, provided Buffalo does not. But if the CBA that we see next year does not include a significant cap on rookie salaries, then there IS NO WAY IN HELL that Richardson, the cost cutting king, is going to squander his economic victory on a frikkin' rookie contract with 50m guaranteed like Sam Bradford, Matthew Stafford ~$42m guaranteed, or Matt Ryan ~$35m, or ...JaMarcus Russel ~$32m

Richardson will NEVER make a mistake like JaMarcus Russel, even if it means passing on Luck. This offseason and season could only solidify his position not to do something like that. And if those two reasons weren't enough, then Claussen and Pike draftings should be.

Unless the new CBA changes the draft as we know it, then there is approximately a ZERO PERCENT CHANCE of Luck getting signed with the Panthers.

....for the poster above: Aaron Rodgers a bust? Really?

I say trade down, and acquire a late 1st rounder, as well as a top 10 1st rounder, and draft a lineman or WR and then late 1st round select Newton. I just have a feeling Newton will be the real deal in the NFL.

But I wont be upset with Luck being selected I just feel this team needs too many pieces and we can fill a few other needs by trading the pick.

EDIT:

I just realized that Newton is now projected as a top 15 pick. SO.... I would actually take Newton at lets say #4 in Buffalo's spot if we were to deal the pick to them. Then if we got a 2nd rounder or other selection I would take a o-lineman, WR or DT

With all due respect to a fellow member who also has a low post count which on this board equals our opinions mean exactly poo..I disagree 100%
if your opinions are poo, they will be treated like it, regardless of post count. if they aren't stupid, then they wo't get treated like it.
You ask why wouldn't he not want to come here...but i have to ask...what do we have to offer him? Why would he want to come here? other than the fact he might be forced to come here..if you were the hot QB of the draft...would you be excited to come to a team that.....

1. A run-first team which means pretty much no great stats for him

he plays on a run first team right now. sure, 30 passes thrown a game, but the ball is run 42 times a game. harbaugh runs a run first bastardized WCO.

also, the offense under a new coaching staff would likely change to fit the new QB's strengths. but regardless of what that ends up looking like after a couple years, for the first couple years, the team will be run heavy anyway. rookie or green QBs have to have a run heavy offense to help them get acclimated to the game at the pro level if they are going to succeed at all. that is something that has helped all those recent rookie QBs do well. they run the ball well over 550 times. you have to have a solid run game. also, luck just doesn't seem like the type who has to have his mega stats.

2. Likely a new coaching staff that may, or may not be to his liking/skill set
every player drafted is going to have to deal with the same thing. goes with the territory.
3. Very few reliable receivers to throw to
meh...smith, gettis, even lafell are decent enough. also the TEs are pretty reliable as are the RBs on the roster. there is plenty to work with as far as receivers go.
4. Based on this year and the fact that we have had 2 starting QB out with concussions...obviously cant protect the QB
much of it has to do with a piss poor scheme, the way opposing defensives have schemed against the offense this year (mainly due to a piss poor game plan/playcalling) and QBs that are in panic mode/deer caught in headlights. not necessarily the olines fault, though they could have done better and could have been healthier. based on previous years, the oline's performance this year is an abberation.
5. No veteran QB to apprentice under/learn from.... like the last hot QB from the draft Tibow (who notably has been sitting on the bench all season which = no immediate impact for all of the Luck nut lickers out there)
vet QB needs brought in for development. not sure why you brought up The Golden Calf of Bristol, but whatever. no one expected him to do all that well right away and most will also agree he was taken way too early.

6. A playbook that reads like a middle school football team in regards to complexity
that will change with a new coaching staff. no reason to expect otherwise.

Frankly I hope (like always) we win a few more games so folks will stop drooling on Luck as if he will be the savior of this franchise.
hope away...that isn't going to happen.

Charlotte is a great city to live in? Maybe in comparison to Phoenix you may be right but compared to Cinci or Buffolo...well..Charlotte might be cool if he likes hanging out with fat ass rednecks and ditsy ass country girls,or other hot women who are transplants from other areas.......however considering he is from the west coast..I highly doubt Charlotte is at the top of his list of places he would like to live (regardless of the team he plays for)
nothing wrong with charlotte. good place to grow up and get a family started.

This is true but yet we are stacked to the grill with RB talent...yet our passing talent...whether that be QB or WR is still yet unproven.

Any new coach that comes in must surely realize this and scheme to the strength for what he inherits..which as of next year will be a team with solid depth at RB with perhaps yet another rookie QB and some 2nd year receivers.

overall, the team that drafts early is usually doing it because they have some major issues. all QBs should (and most likely do) expect that to be the case. panthers situation isn't nearly as bad as most teams that are out there right now who will be in the market for a QB or who have taken a QB early the past few years. rams, lions, bucs, falcons, jets...none of these teams were in good places when they drafted their QB and the same thing goes for most that have been drafted early.

Andrew Luck may seem like a great answer for our terrible quarterback situation but let's do some thinking. Luck may have a great pass percentage, but let's consider that he is throwing in one of the worst pass defense conferences in NCAA. Remember Jimmy Clausen put up more yards than Luck and just as many Touchdowns in his last season of NCAA. I feel like we'll be trading 1 year experience talent for no year experience talent. At this point, Cam Newton is the most impactive player that could make a change in Carolina. His running threat could give the panthers the #1 rush offense in the league. This is the draft of Vick all over again. Oh except Vick is 6 inches shorter and 30 pounds less than Newton. That sure is a lot of field vision.

drafting luck is a no brainer, but i still voted "wait till end of year" becuase we'll have to wait and see if Luck even declares for the draft. with a possible lockout alot of non seniors are going to return for thier junior and senior years. Also, harbaugh might be staying at stanford which might also play a role in whether he leaves early or not. fwiw
