Anyone Still Want to Defend Clausen?

Rodney Peete. Jake Delhomme. Matt Moore.

And for the record, St. Pierre IS better than Clausen.

Now, that's HOFER material.

Let's say that St. Pierre IS better than Clausen...WTF does that say?

I am not going to defend Clausen, but it's not because I believe that he is as awful as we assume, it's because I don't think he has the swag necessary to be a franchise QB. Even though the O-line looks like a bunch of rambling jackasses out there, chasing their tails, and Fox and the OC just refuse to let the ball fly down field, Clausen seems almost too eager to throw it out, and there is just something perverse about that. Even with his perceived softness, at this point in Clausen's short career I will defend him as a back-up QB.

Since when is a 2nd round pick "the farm"?

When that second round is going to be in the Mid 30's

But hey, with Hurney as a GM that pick would have wasted anyways.

Also, Clausen has been doing pretty badly but the O-Line deserves a lot of the blame. Absolutely no excuse for guys like Gross and Kalil playing so badly.

It wasn't the O-line's fault when threw that pick-6 today. Obviously the O-line is playing at an almost unidentifiable caliber compared to the past 2 years, but Jimmy isn't making it any better.

I've always given Jimmy the benefit of the doubt (hell I still somewhat do) but Jimmy's showing so far this year is just bad.

Not rookie bad.

But baaaad.

Clausen really does get rattled when he gets hit 2-3 times in fairly quick succession and it affects him for several possession after that until he gets trust back in his OLine.

The Seahawks got a ton of pressure early in the second half and it took Clausen until the 4th to get his composure back. Unfortunately it looked like a fair portion of the sacks/pressure came due to him getting jittery in the pocket, so it's not completely all on the OLine.

The pick 6 was bad. But why on Earth was that play even called?! We were destroying them on the ground and were a little shell shocked after their fast start, all we needed was a bit of time with the ball to get our composure back.

Davidson and Clausen are a really bad combination...

Peete - No escapability.

I've been a Panther fan since day one, and even remembering our first year, we've never had QBing this bad for this long. That includes the year with Randy Fasani seeing action.

I'm almost insulted you would say this about Peete.

He had great feet in the pocket and did well in avoiding pressure. A big part of avoiding pressure is knowing where it's coming from before the snap. Peete usually did. Clausen never does.

Additionally, in Peete's year here as the starter he had 3 different 300+ yard games. Clausen hasn't even sniffed that. In order to throw for 300 yards, you have to avoid pressure and make good decisions. Peete did.

Additionally, Peete was pretty much a stop-gap guy and fairly well-traveled. So, take a look at his rookie year and even he had a better rookie season than Clausen (although it's not that hard to)

His rookie year:

Full-time starter for us in 02:

No comparison.

Delhomme - Never knew who was coming.

All-time winningest QB in franchise history. And even with a full year of sucking last year, he has a career rating of 81. A career completion % of 59 and as of right now 125 TDs to 100 INTs. Yup, that guy never knew who was coming. Smh...

Moore - Never knew who was coming or had a hot read.

Considering he had our only legitimate thrown TDs this year, I'd re-think that. Played behind the same OL as Clausen as well. Yet, amazingly, he didn't have nearly as many throwaways and probably less sacks.

Saying St. Pierre is better than Clausen is like saying the 3 of hearts is better than the 3 of clubs. They're both bad.

Yes, they both suck, but St. Pierre sucks less. Ryan Leaf sucks less.

Lol yeah cause the FO knew that we would be picking first in the draft when they traded that pick...

And no, it wasn't the O-line's fault that he threw the pick-six. It was their fault that he had absolutely no time to settle in the pocket and try to make a play after the first quarter. I'm not denying that Clausen has done badly, and I'm not saying that he would be good if the O-line was better--what I am saying is that a rookie QB needs help from his frickin O-line.

Proudiddy - Blitz recognition is clearly something that rookies will always struggle with as opposing defences are so much better at hiding who they are sending.

Clausen is not the worst QB in the world, nor is he the worst rookie in the history of the NFL.

He has had moments, but the moments of him struggling are far outweighing the good. Try not to get so angry about it, not much you or I can do about it. Give him the remaining games to get a decent body of work to see if there was any progression in his play at all. Before this game he had made progress and the first half was a continuation of that.

Remember that the meltdown also included a special teams TD, so whilst Clausen was bad int eh second half, there were other contributions to the dismal showing after the 2nd quarter.
