Matt Moore Vs Jimmy Clausen

Ok so I have seen a lot of people essentially saying that with Clausen we have no deep threat whereas Matt was able to force the issue more. Considering that I thought I would lay it out in black and white for everyone to see.

Analysis

"Matt Challenges Teams Deep"

Matt does have a nicer distribution from a statistical standpoint and he does have a higher attempt percentage than Clausen's when throwing over 20 yards. However in actuality, Matt completed just 3 more passes over 20 yards than Clausen did.

"We play a PA scheme with a vertical passing game"

Matt's best 'zone' was 1-9 yards in the middle of the field, exactly the area that people are critical of Clausen for throwing. Matt also threw 42.7% of his passes between 1-9 yards. Jimmy threw 55.7% of his passes 1-9 yards, however Matt was FAR more consistent and this is actually one of the area's that Jimmy is struggling with. For a scheme that 'relies on the deep ball' it's clear our OC didn't get the memo.

"Jimmy throws too many passes behind the LoS"

An area that people are critical of Clausen is his tendency to throw to or behind the LoS. Jimmy has thrown 26 passes into the backfield, Matt threw 25 or 19.1% of his passes, which is almost identical to Jimmy's 19.2%

"Jimmy Throws a lot of balls away and gets a lot knocked down at LoS"

A true statement. Jimmy has thrown away the second highest percentage of balls with 7.9% behind Alex Smith (8%), who are both well clear of the pack. He also sits in 7th with the most passes batted at the LoS (14.1%), with McNabb, Campbell, Sanchez, Fitzpatrick, Plamer & Bradford all having a higher percentage disrupted. Matt Moore was the 13th best with just 7.2%

17/38 (44.7%), 4 runs, 163 yards (4.3 ypa), 0 TDs, 4 Ints, 13 Sck, 17.7 QB Rating

When Blitzed

52 Drop Backs (32.3%)

27/46, (58.7%), 299 yards (6.5ypa), 1 TD, 3 Int, 6 Sck, 58.2 QB Rating

Jimmy Clausen

No Pressure

129 Drop Backs (67.5%)

71/124 (57.3%), 6 run, 764 yards (6.2 ypa), 1 TD, 4 Ints, 64.7 QB Rating

Pressure

62 Drop Backs (32.5%)

12/43 (27.9%), 3 runs, 123 yards (2.9 ypa), 0 TDs, 4 Ints, 16 Sck, 29.9 QB Rating

When Blitzed

73 Drop Backs (38.2%)

21/58, (36.2%), 3 runs, 260 yards (4.5ypa), 0 TD, 2 Ints, 12 Sck, 55.2 QB Rating

Analysis

One thing is clear, both QBs seriously struggle when pressured and they are pressured a lot, ranking 5th & 7th in sack frequency. However they ranked 11th and 16th in frequency being hit, meaning they tend to not get many passes away 'just in time' but also that much of the pressure is just movement in the pocket. It would appear both get flustered when having to move around.

To be fair it would appear the OLine has blocked just about as well for both QBs and have performed about as well (or poorly as each other)

What is the data pool for this? Career? Season?

The only thing that really stands out to me (besides the throw aways) is Pressure and When Blitzed.

Everything else we probably already knew.

One thing I'd like to point out though. You say the scheme "relies on the deep ball" which I think is misleading. Not only are the deep balls very important but also the intermediate routes (the digs, comebacks, etc). So to say the "deep ball" is important then only compare completions of 20+ yards is misleading. In our offense, those 15-18 yard digs are very important as well and we throw them quite often (at least they were called quite often).

Bottom line, stats are for losers.

Does anyone here still believe in Moore? I honestly still think he is our best qb.

I wouldn't mind having Moore backup Luck next year. Matt thrives in the backup role and if he ever sees the field again he will want to show the same effort he did against San Francisco earlier this season.

This board has been inundated with stats from Clausen backers and Moore supporters left and right since the draft in April. What really happened was nothing more than a divisive line between those who thought Clausen should start and those who thought Moore should start.

What was even worse were the obvious sentiments that a Panther fan could not say anything on this board about either QB without being categorized. It was as if one had to choose sides. 11 games into a horrible season and those sentiments have died away along with any hope of being even the slightest bit respectable as a football team.

The bottom line? Neither Clausen nor Moore pass the eye test. Forget all the stats, forget your undying allegiance to the team and try to look at the play of both these guys- neither looks to be anywhere close to being starter material. And, to me, that's all I need to know about either one of them.

I disagree. I think with a competent run game Moore can be a successful QB. We've actually seen it despite how you want to categorize those games. Moore didn't have that this year and it showed. On the other hand Clausen has both had a run game and not had a run game and the results are the same.

the difference being, moore has had time to sit and observe from the sideline along with getting advice and help from a veteran...and played a few games. moore has been in the mix for a few seasons now.

clausen has had none of the above.

i don't support or hate either qb...but clausen is getting an undeserved bad rep from many people.
