NEW YORK -- Union executive committee member Brian Dawkins says he believes NFL owners and players have a sense of urgency to avoid a lockout because they don't want to alienate fans.

The veteran Denver Broncos safety said Tuesday "we understand who butters our bread."

Dawkins and fellow NFL Players Association executive committee member Mike Vrabel alternated between optimism and expressing frustration with the league's proposals. They spoke during a conference call to discuss negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement.

Vrabel is a veteran linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs. He says the NFL's offers to players in exchange for an 18-game regular season were "not enough return on investment for our bodies."

"Sense of Urgency"

I don't feel looking through 150 comments worth of this mess, so someone help me out here. The current CBA runs out at the first of March, which is right around the time free agency usually starts. So if a new CBA isn't agreed upon by this time (free agency), will the free agents be able to go a head and sign with new teams? If so, would some teams (us, of course) refrain from pursuing those free agents until the CBA is agreed upon while others are acquiring new players?

no free agency, no off season training(team related), the only thing still set is the draft in april( without new cba)

"...guys getting hurt in the NFL and not having access to health insurance afterwards."

The vast majority of working people in this country don't have health insurance available to them by their former employer after they no longer work there.

How many of you work in jobs where concussions or other debilitating injuries are the norm?

This right here tells me that you and I are from two totally different backgrounds. If you're calling this middle class then I can definitely see why we can't agree on a number here. I'm trusting your judgement on the actual house/condo prices. The 150k would be the number I am comfortable with as an example of an "upper middle" class home purchase. That is only, as I'm not familiar with condos, if this is owning instead of renting. You'd be better off owning instead of throwing your money away renting something that expensive.

I never said middle class. I was correcting your assumptions that every player lives like a gangsta. Lamar Lathon had million dollar contracts and lived next to an accountant.

A $150k house is not upper middle class in any universe

i thought the obama health care bill will cover them, if they cant afford to pay

then get a reduced or subsidized premium, so whether a out of work football player

or a miniumum wage worker the benefit of insurance is there. The same for all of us.

and maybe they can get 3 years unemployment pay too..
