What is/was NASA's big annoucement?

I haven't seen exactly what they said, but I believe it was that someone at Stanford has discovered a bacteria or some such that was living off of arsenic rather than phospherous. Basically that life can exist in other ways than what we have thought and need to look for life outside our planet in more ways as well.

it's a pretty major thing. think of it like this: life requires certain building blocks based on what we knew. these building blocks seemed "non-negotiable", in other words, if a planetary body didnt have one of them, there was no point in looking for life.

that appears not to be the case with this finding; one of those building blocks was replaced by something else.

At least, that's how I understand it. Pretty cool.
