Sherrod Martin fined 40K by the NFL

Bigger gloves do not make it harder to score a knockout. It's actually the whipping motion of the head that makes you black out, not the force of the concussion (generally).

Also by the laws of physics, punches thrown without gloves deliver more newtons of force per surface area than punches thrown with gloves because the force is distributed over a greater area. So in theory an MMA fighter will sustain more damage to his brain in fewer punches than a boxer.

Guess we'll find out later on as the first generation MMA fighters get older and older.

What I was referring to was a show I saw that went over the culminating issue boxers are/have been having with brain injuries. What they highlighted was the actual amount of punches a boxer took throughout his career, rather than how hard they were hit.

Also more force doesn't necessarily mean more damage. "Softer" but more repetitious hitting causes swelling in the brain, which is what they contributed to a lot of the problems. Long term swelling = bad.

''The man hands them down and we've got to pay them,'' cornerback Richard Marshall said.

Coach John Fox shook his head in the locker room as he heard about the fine. Several teammates said Martin had no other choice than to hit Moore high as he came across the middle on a play near the end zone.

''When you start tackling lower they're going to come up with a rule like that,'' cornerback Captain Munnerlyn said. ''I'm really kind of lost in this situation.''

The fine was a hot topic in the locker room of the woeful Panthers (1-10), with many defensive players vowing they won't change their style of play despite the numerous hefty fines.

''If you're thinking about the fine you're not going to be playing hard. You're going to slow up on some tackles,'' Munnerlyn said. ''That means you've got to keep playing hard and if the fines come they're going to come.''

Science can say what it wants, but math says it better.

Boxers take, on average, a greater amount of blows to the head than an MMA fighter does. Boxing matches last for up to 12 rounds (3min each), and upon being flashed, the boxer gets a count to rise to his feet, at least appear steady, and continue the fight. In many cases, they are not completely coherent yet and are still suffering from the damage they just took.

In MMA, if a fighter gets flash KO'd, the fight is usually stopped, unless it's a marquee bout. It depends on the officials to judge whether or not to immediately end it, but if they see a guy swarm afterwards they have to stop the fight just to protect the other fighter.

Well, Sterling Sharpe said on one of the Playbook shows, which Baldinger and Theismann agreed that they would rather be hit in the head than to go low and be tackled around the knees. That is what this game is coming to. Take out the man's legs and leave them crippled so seems what the NFL wants.

They will just start to fine guys for going for the knees of poor defenseless WRs. You will then be limed to a pitches strike zone and arm tackles.

BS...God this league is miserable. A couple of Harrison's hits, yeah, you can make a case it is dirty, but this most recent one is COMPLETE bull. Goodell needs to be replaced. He's made NFL football almost unwatchable.

Thats not what the ratings say. There are always going to be gray area situations in rules.

What has Goodell done to deserve replacment?

I wonder if rugby players end up with brain damage from concussions. I'm thinking probably not. The no pads/no helmets thing could work, but it would radically change the game and the skillsets required to play it. There are plenty of options to explore here to find a long term solution and the NFL needs to explore them, not just focus on one narrow aspect of the game.

No they don't because they don't use their head as a weapon.

It's also much more controlled. You can see the hit coming in rugby (league or union), whereas running into a pile of bodies, or looking back to track the ball etc leaves you blindsided.
