oh I forgot to add... put the trap on the ground, and not on anything you don't want ruined by possum poo...

They've gotten my porch a couple times after I've trapped them (I'm not targeting them, so I have to keep setting mine up on the porch), and possum poo is probably one of the most disgusting things in the universe...

You could always catch them and release them underneath the landlord's house...

This happened to me 3 years ago. It was a possum. It tore a hole in the flex ducting under the vent below my bed. At night I'd be falling asleep and hear "scratch scratch" and woke up - could not figure out if I was dreaming. After a number of these incidents, I got home late one night and definitely heard something. Checked under the crawl space and there was this possum hanging from the bottom of the floor support next to the duct, looking at me and hissing with his eyes red from the reflection of the flashlight; I almost gave birth.

Called the eco-friendly trapping people (Critter Control) and they got 2 possums and a raccoon. Never had an issue again.

Can you get underneath the house? If you're sure it's an opossum, it's nocturnal, so go down there and block its access to the ductwork/vent during the day.
