Harbaugh / Luck Question #2

What else could they really have done though?

Steve Smith is here. We have a veteran WR. While he isn't going to mentor these guys, he will hold them to expectations. Why drop millions for a guy like Housh who has done nothing all season but bitch about not being targeted enough?

TO... no. Please :/

Boldin I could've seen, but in a season that was all about clearing cap space, no dice. I'm pretty sure Baltimore was more attractive as well: established QB, RB, great D, solid TE option, and a competent #2 WR.

Housh was nearly free.. we could have brought him in for a year and paid him about the same as most rookies.. but that's another issue..

Bolden wasn't here just for this year.. he would be here for several years.. all his leadership and talent would be here for a long time... anyone thinking about this year is being short sighted.. we might have given up LaFell for Bolden (3rd pick).. I'm good with that.. Most people should be.. But... we could have traded down for LaFell instead of fuging AE.. ;) a lot of what ifs.. my only point is a true #1 wouldn't have been a 1 year fix..

our rookies need more than this year to adapt.. a 3rd and 6th rounder should be given 2-3 years to catch up to the NFL.. Bolden would have given them time to adapt..

plus.. even at the most basic level, the new coaching staff has more weapons on offense..

really, who knows how things would have turned out.. you're right, I'm sure Baltimore was a lot more attractive..

but Bolden would have brought talent and leadership here for years.. so no one should really be talking about him as a 1 year quick-fix... if it did happen, we would have lost LaFell in the draft.. or we could have traded down for him instead of AE.. however someone feels like viewing the circumstances.. even so, Bolden for LaFell? I would take that...

Marshall could have been possible.. but who really knows how that would have went.. I know he shows up and plays (when healthy) and is 1 of the more dominant receivers in the league..

and perhaps I need to look at a new list of WRs available this offseason, but last year, I didn't see any with the talent we could have at least attempted to obtain..

Let's say the dream comes true and we get both.

Do you start Luck in his rookie season or sit him behind a vet for a year?

He will most certainly need time to transition to the speed of the pros (they all do) but with that said, who knows Harbaugh's offense better than Luck?

So...start him or sit him? And what's your rationale?

start him

we'll still have a good offensive line to block for him, a receiving core featuring smith, at least one very good running back, and if we make a play for a good all around TE we've got an offense that can produce with a young QB. not a fan at all of starting the "stop gap" veteran unless it's like kurt warner

I remember reading somewhere that the Vikings talked to Housh, but he wasn't happy with the monetary compensation they were offering. In a year that we didn't resign or simply cut some veterans, it would've been out of character to have gone and picked up a free agent WR. That's also why the Boldin pick up probably didn't happen. We already had a 30 year old WR in the form of Steve Smith. Boldin is hella solid and I'm by no means saying he wouldn't have had an impact, but it doesn't gel with the M.O. of the organization.

I'm pretty excited about our WR prospects now. Gettis can be the deep threat while LaFell is looking more and more like he could be that big bodied possession receiver the team has been looking for to replace Moose. My fingers are crossed that AE is able to pick things up and learns from Smitty to give us another threat in the slot or on returns.

If we weren't so giving with our draft picks, I'd have been more upset with Marshall not being targeted. Again though, doesn't really go with the m.o. of the squad. However I am not a fan of his attitude, and I don't think he'd have even been given a chance if he started showing his ass like he did in Denver.

With the way we pretty much showered the WR position this offseason to try and improve the passing game, I'm all for giving them time to develop.

In fact, I'm extremely happy that we did. We've got two young QBs (and maybe another one on the way!) who are going to be growing with their WR corps.

Our line may return to form assuming Otah doesn't stub a toe or worse.
