Harbaugh / Luck Question #2

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Let's say the dream comes true and we get both.

Do you start Luck in his rookie season or sit him behind a vet for a year?

He will most certainly need time to transition to the speed of the pros (they all do) but with that said, who knows Harbaugh's offense better than Luck?

So...start him or sit him? And what's your rationale?

I say trade down for a second round pick because one season isn't long enough to evaluate a QB on a team without RB's/O-Line/Offensive Coordinator/WR's (see what i did there?)

then again i paid $80 for the clausen jersey when he got his first start based solely on his performance in the preseason Baltimore Ravens game so my opinion will always be biased in hopes that I can actually wear the jersey i paid for.

Behind WHAT veteran? We aren't going to draft Luck and then pick up a vet(that's worth starting) and push Clausen to the 3. If we finish the season 1-15 or 2-14 and we draft the quarterback everyone says is the closest thing to a sure thing since Elway and we let him sit behind a) journeyman QB b)the guy that just led us to 1-15 or c) an old washed up QB, the fan base will go absolutely ape sh*t. If he gets drafted, IMO he will at the very least go into camp into a head to head battle with Jimmy. If he's the savior folks say he is then he will win the job with relative ease. On the other hand, I'm waiting for the day he says he staying in school so everyone just feels like a fool.

My brain is fried from trying to figure out who our next coach and maybe QB will be I can't think straight. I'm ready to just sit back and watch this thing unfold. It will either spiral into two times the train wreck were already witnessing(if that's possible) or we will pull the same stunt the Falcons and Bucs have the past few years. Who the hell knows at this point?

Assuming Clausen isn't under Harbaugh's graces and traded. . .

My rationale would be to sign a vet (like Billy Volek or whoever else will be available) and start him. It doesn't have to be the entire season, just eight games or so.

And that's assuming the Panthers aren't playoff contenders.

the vet FA class is pretty horrid. there are a few older ones who would do well on the sidelines who have a lot to offer as a mentor, but none of them i would feel great about starting unless there is an emergency.

the only one who might come out in FA would be mcnabb, but adding him and a first rounder QB would be really expensive. also, the only way i would pick up mcnabb was if we ended up trading down and drafting newton.

i dont really see harbaugh wanting to keep clausen around. most likely clausen would be traded in that scenario, esp. if clausen is right that harbaugh doesn't like him.

if we draft luck #1, most likely he will be the starter right away. they may talk about giving a vet the start like the rams did with feely, and the jets did with clemons, but when it's time for the season to start, it would be the rookie starting. if it is the harbaugh/luck combo, chances of luck starting right away go through the roof.

Depends how the OL, the running game and the scheme we use. If the OL is going to have Luck running for his life every second play I don't really want to give him David Carr syndrome. If the running game can't carry him if he's having a rookie moment I don't want the fanbase the chance to overreact. If the scheme is still the same I don't think its fair for a rookie to be ruined in such a crap and predictable scheme as what we are running now.

Three assumptions. Assuming that Luck is the next John Elway or Peyton Manning. Assuming that there might be a rookie cap in place for next year's draft. And last but not least, assuming we have the number one overall pick. We have all the incentives in the world to trade down. If Luck is really a sure thing no matter where he goes, why wouldn't teams give massive compensation for the chance to draft a special guy at the most important position?

The Redskins got New Orlean's whole draft for Ricky Williams, and it boggles everyone's minds how the Redskins didn't become a dynasty after that. I'm not saying we will get the same for Luck (If we could, I'm sure everyone would be excited to basically trade Luck away:D), but we could get a first rounder for next year's draft along with the traded first this year, and a second and third round pick for this upcoming draft. Then with our first pick from the trade (let's say we traded down two or three picks) we draft Patrick Peterson. And now since we have two first rounders for the next draft because of the trade (Our annual pick and the traded first rounder), we trade away one of those to get back into this year's first round to draft Nick Fairley. Finally, we trade away either Stewart or Goodson and maybe add on our extra third round pick to get back in the first round, and draft Ryan Mallet.

Scenario: We trade with Cincinnati.

Bengals get: 1st overall pick

We get: 3rd or 4th overall pick, Bengals 2nd round, 3rd round, next year's 1st

Hopefully we win the bid for Logan Mankins when he hits the free agent market, if so, this scenario is picture perfect for rebuilding this team. Luck may be the best player in the draft, but he is just one guy. You get compensation for him, we pick up three pro-bowl ready guys. The extra first rounder for next year is for Alshon Jeffery. With this upcoming draft we rebuild the team. With next year's draft, or the year after that, we do whatever it takes to bring in Alshon Jeffery. He has the potential to be as good if not better than Andre Johnson.

I honestly believe that we pick Luck and then trade back into the first round giving up a player and or picks next year to get him some help. I think Deangelo will be tagged and either him or goodson will be traded, Steve Smith may also be traded to a championship team for picks. Up coming draft may be the most lucrative draft in carolina history. Please Marty Hurney dont f*ck this up.

If Otah can return to 09' form and Gross and Wharton are healthy, I would start Luck. It would be a heavy run oriented offense, with Luck only needing to make a couple plays a game.

If our o-line is questionable, get a vet in here, or let clausen flop around until we fix the line.
