Richardson Quotes - Then and Now

"I apologize to our fans who have supported us so well. Bringing a championship to the Carolinas has always been our goal and that will continue."

Interpretation: We went cheap and saved millions of bucks. We want to win as long as we can do it on a Tampa Bay budget. But you aren't getting your money back and we will continue to take your money because as PSL owners you have no choice. Sorry!!

Oh, but we PSL owners do have a choice.

Not really. Trying to dump your psls in this economy without taking another bath is highly unlikely. So most are going to hope the team gets better next year and the economy improves so they will have some value again. PSls haen't been worth their face value since 2008.

Didn't say there was a good choice, but there is, indeed, a choice. Always has been.

The bolded quote is the quote that I just cannot shake. Excuse my french, but what the f*ck did he expect?! This team is horrible, and there was plenty of us who could see it from the beginning. Hopefully, he rights the ship, but I still dont like how he approached this season. Basically, willing to write off a season to please his fellow owners. That's ridiculous to me

Like most of the fans.....he expected Matt Moore to be a legitimate NFL starter and he expected our OLine/Running Game to be a strength for this team.

Neither of those two happened.

Say what you want, but No One would have predicted that the QB play and OLine play would be as atrocious as it is.

The defense (with most of the new young starters) has played well this season. So, stop blaming this on us going young.

The Big Uglies let this team down and in a big way.

I swear we would be a better franchise if the fans like you just moved along to another team. I hear the Cowboys have a few openings.:yesnod:

Thanks for the offer but I will stay here like I have from the beginning. The season has been rough on most folks but it doesn't mean folks need to start attacking each other. The fans haven't been the problem this year and most of the criticism from me and others is well desered.

Richardson did go cheap this year that is true but that wasn't the issue really. If we were 7-4 like the Bucs instead of 1-10, folks including me wouldn't be so unhappy. The problem was that the way they made cuts and stripped the squad really made no sense looking back at it. Some guys like Johnson needed to be cut while I would argue that someone like Hoover was on the last year of his contract anyway and would have been gone next year so really there was little reason not to let him finish out his career here for what was a pretty reasonable contract. And he would have upgraded the running game from day 1. Even cutting Jake given we had to pay him anyway looks pretty stupid given how poorly Moore played and the fact he is on IR. Sure hindsight is 20/20 but honestly it wasn't just fans like me but every major sportwriter (with the exception of Peter King) said accurately we would be pretty bad this year. But that is all water under the bridge and has been dredged up numerous times.

The real issue still out isn't what we spend but what we get for what we spend. Posters praise Richardson for spending money without evaluating how well that money was spent. Look at 2010. We spend 112 million and go 1-10 while a team like baltimore spends 92 million and is 8-3 so far. Even Atlanta only spent 96 million this year.

I really don't care what Richardson spends if he can put out a winning product each year. Go with the draft or the free agent market it doesn't matter as long as we get great value for what we spend. I don't have the time to do an indepth look but a cursory review shows that teams like New England and Indianapolis etc spend toward the bottom each year yet they win consistently every year.

The problems have been noted by posters in the past but few teams build consistent winning teams cheaply unless it through the draft. But the way we are going about it makes little sense. Teams like new England trade down for multiple picks while we trade up for fewer picks. They take high probability guys for success we take long term projects who don't see the field for years and by the time they are good are through their rookie contract. They supplement their players with older guys willing to take less to extend their career. We give up draft picks to trade for guys and dump them before the end of 1 season.

What do we need? A consistent philosophy. We have to be willing to accumulate picks by trading down not up, have to hit on the majority of picks which means not going with long term projects as we have done repeatedly and supplementing the draft with older veterans willing to work for less to extend their career and young guys who have not yet made a name for themselves.

First priority has to be filling key positions with franchise guys. Number 1 is a quarterback, number 2 is the offensive line and number 3 is the defensive line. So if we extend that to the draft and resigning core players, Kalil is more important than Williams at this point and drafting a franchise quarterback assuming Clausen isn't the one and drafting offensive and defensive linemen seems to be the priorities. Areas like linebacker, secondary, even running back are all decent for next year even if we don't sign Marshall, Davis or Williams. Not saying I don't want them back because I do but none of the 3 are irreplaceable. And as much as people hate to hear it we might need to dump guys who are coming up on a contract year while they still have value like the Patriots did with Moss.

The Big Uglies let this team down and in a big way.

Like I said for 6 months the problem was not only replacing older guys but that you had to have 7 or 8 backups play well as starters and had to have another 7 or 8 guys with no experience step up and play well in our rotation. It was too many guys who all had to play well at the same time instead of phasing it in like most teams.

So yeah it was going young especially on offense where you have more skill positions. Defense can get by on instincts, athleticism, and aggression while offense requires more skill, mental awareneess, and precision. All things most rookies and young guys lack.

And as for most of the fans, almost every sportwriter and pundit accurately predicted we would be bad this year. It was pretty obvious to most folks out there, so it should have been obvious to Jerry.
