Does Jake have tunnel vision?

Davidson's been good at adapting though. Hopefully he takes this sort of thing into account.

The emergence of Williams and Stewart should give us a lot of options next year. Best case scenario for me would be two things happening.

1) retain Jordan Gross

2) get a legit "hybrid" TE

(trading for Heath Miller is my ideal there, but it's pure wishful thinking)

We could get pettigrew in the first round in the 18 range, I know we need defense but at that point there might not a player that fits us that is worth taking at that position and we need a full time te that can catch and block and Pettigrew can do both well.

when you're running a lot of playaction you're going to have flow in a direction.

I actually believe we used combo routes with receivers too little, because there are a lot of great options there compared to just looking across the field between the two guys who are realistic options.

That's true, but usually the direction is in levels with a dump off to the opp side, with us there isn't usually levels, at least there wasn't in the cardinals game and for most of the season. it was either deep with a decoy or crosses and slants to the right.

Per the 2 sentences taken from prior posts, the first one certainly is accurate, Jake has a positive win percentage for the games he has started, better than any other QB we've had. Tying that in with the second sentence, imagine how much higher that percentage might be if Jake executed those mechanics better. And I think the tunnel vision/bad mecahnics are one and the same.

There's nothing wrong with a QB having a favorite target, most of the greats did (Unitas/Berry, Montana/Rice, Young/Rice, to name but a few), but as has also been rightly pointed out on these threads, a QB has to take, and be ABLE to take, what a defense gives him. The trouble with Jake is: sometimes he can, too often he can't. To me (I'm repeating this yet again) the three things he does quite poorly are: the play fake to a back before passing (how many times thru the years have we seen him gesture to a back whose not even there? If it's not fooling me, I'm confident that it's not fooling the defense); little or no use of pump fakes, and as this thread is all about, his propensity (too often) to eye just one receiver from the time he takes the snap to the time the ball should leave his hand (or he takes a sack, because he locked onto said receiver for too long with no time and/or effort to find another receiver). But I think the tunnel vision label is an accurate one.

He doesn't have to be an all-time great to make this team click, not with the pieces in place now. But we have the talent for him to be more than just a 'game manager', i.e., don't make mistakes, play safe, etc. We have the running game we've been hoping for all these years. Better mechanics execution would really put a lot of pressure on defenses. But Jake has to make that happen.

Just because you imagine it to be so doesn't make it so. If he was as bad as you say, his latest game would have been a norm rather than an aberration. The simple fact is, he spreads the ball around in our offense, and hits his best receiver often but not too often.

I imagine it huh? Try watching a Panthers game every now and then, hardly ever will you see Jake look to another reciever besides the first reciever he sets his eyes to after the snap.

Well if that's really the case then try to keep it quiet. We wouldn't want the people who are paid to notice those types of things to actually catch on to what you alone have figured out, would we?

Also, read your own thread, it's not just "me alone" who knows Jake will stare down one reciever and will not look off him until he thinks its a good time to throw it. Not all the time obviously, but way too much.

If he stared down his receivers like you say he does then he would never make a completion. Any opposing cornerback would just have to look at Jake to know where the ball was going.

In the real world, your position just doesn't make sense. Things would look a ton different if it was true, and we would have a different QB under center for sure.

I think what he's trying to say is that jake rarely goes to his Third read. This season for the most part Jake eyed his 1st option then went to the second and then back to the first. Now I'm not saying he did this every passing play but he did it a lot.

You really don't know football I guess? It's kind of hard for a CB to read the eyes of a QB while he's chasing said reciever down step for step. They do run routes, do you know what a route is? A CB can look all they want, they still wont know where the route will end up. Unless the Safety has eyes like a hawk, he wont know which reciever it's going to, just the side of the field it's going. Against a zone blitz it's a different story. We know Jake can't get the ball out fast unless it's quick hit to the left or right off the snap. That's why he just sits in the pocket getting all jittery when he knows pressure is coming.

Take a poll of how many people thinks Jake stares down recievers way too much. Maybe you'll be in for a surprise.

Let me explain from my point out of jake's throws 129 went to smith and 108 went to Muhammad. That's 237 attempts to his 1/2 receivers, out of his total attempts which is 414 attempts. That's a little over 57 percent of his throws to his one and two receivers. While Our Two te's, two Rb's and other two receivers who saw major game time. saw 177 throws. 6 receivers saw 177 passes which is about 29 targets per receiver.

Now lets compare that to another running team.

How about Atlanta.

White 144 targets

Jenkings 88 targets

232 passes to his 1/2 receivers out of his 434 attempts. 53 percent of his throws to his one and twos. 202 targets to his other receiving options.

Lets try say Baltimore

mason 121 targets

Clayton 82 targets

203 targets at 1/2 options

203 attempts out of 428 to his 1/2 options which is 47 percent of his throws

225 attempts to his other options.

So when you see Delhomme staring to the left and not even going right it does not mean he is staring down Smith, although he is probably watching him close because Smith is usually your primary target. It just means that 95% of the action is on the left half of the field. Yes, Williams or Moose or whoever may be to the right and fairly open but Jakes main concern will be left. If Jake diagnosis that there is no way anything to the left is open and he has yet to be sacked, then look right.

Jake is flawed but he does not have tunnel vision.

Good post. His career splits support this also. No matter whether Moose or Smitty were lined up left or right, their stats are fairly consistent but Jake's are much much better throwing left than right over his tenure in Carolina.
