War Story...

So while on vacation I saw my uncle who had told me a story about my paw paw that I had never heard.

Paw Paw was in New Guinea during WWII. Being the West Virginia boy that he was, he strayed off while hunting a wild hog. After he shot the hog, apparently he was shot at by a single japanese soldier who was out there. Paw Paw laid low until the jap revealed his location, at which time Paw Paw shot and killed him. He then went back to camp and rounded up some guys to help drag back the hog.

Anyways, thought it sounded like something you would see on Band of Brothers. Apparently I never knew how close he came to being killed over there and in turn me never being born.

Moral of the story, don't fuck with country boy soldiers.

True story from WWII (My father was very young and married late. I am not that old!) I did not hear this story until my father was dying.

My father got orders to report to a submarine. At the very last minute those orders were mysteriously changed. The sub went out to sea and was never heard from again. I know you all would have missed me.

Moral---be thankful for Luck too. Both kinds. :D

My great grandfather I was able to meet while he was still alive. Lived to like 92 or something.

One great story my maw maw shared was his first time seeing a locomotive train. He was from Ft.Mill. He hid in the bushes.

To comfort his mom he said there wasn't a bullet overvthere with his name on it.

While marching in France(don't remember the city) he went down to a brook and took off his socks and soaked his feet while bullets would randomly hit the water. She said he was so exhausted he didnt care anymore.

He has some medals but no idea what.

WW2 Granddad NEVER EVER said a word. He told my dad years later after they finally reconciled.

My dad, Vietnam. On his 50th bday he me and all my brothers over to watch The Deer Hunter. Incredibly powerful movie.

Afterwords he finally let all his demons out and went into detail for the first time what he had seen and done.

All I could do was hug the old man and go out to my car and sob. Amazing dude my dad.

A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,

Then one day he was shootin at some food,

And up through the ground came a bubblin crude.

Well the first thing you know ol Jed's a millionaire,

Kinfolk said "Jed move away from there"

Said "Californy is the place you ought to be"

So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.

Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars.

Well now its time to say good by to Jed and all his kin.

And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in.

You're all invited back a gain to this locality

To have a heapin helpin of their hospitality

Hillybilly that is. Set a spell, Take your shoes off.

Y'all come back now, y'hear?.

My uncle was a t sgt during WWII and was stationed at Toretto Airfield in Italy. He was a member of the 484th bomb group. His plane was called "Hot Rocks". On a mission to Munich, after bombs away, the plane was hit by flack that knocked out 2 engines. The pilot was injured, and my uncle brought the plane back. My aunt told me that my uncle was injured in a certain place, and that was why he never had any kids. He returned from the war an alcoholic, and fought it the rest of his life.

Another uncle was a navy fighter pilot during Vietnam and later a Blue Angel. He was also the flight instructor for one of the astronauts, but I can't remember which one. Most of his stories involve either calling the air force pilots pussies for landing on the ground or how the navy pilots played pranks on them. The stories I've heard about Vietnam are mostly about how it was a bunch of crap and they weren't allowed to hit any meaningful targets.

Chris's dad was in the Korean War. Chris has heard stories about the war, but all his dad talks about to me is drinking and fighting the mp's. Chris is named after his dad's friend that was killed.

Chris's uncle was on the front lines in WWII. He was shot in the head and fell in the snow. The snow saved his life. He was rescued, and had a plate in his head. He only recently passed away.

True story

It's world war 2. My 2 uncles and grandpa are in it. 2 of them get killed, because great granny would have no sons or children for that matter, left, the government sends a troop to find Private JLdog and send him home to my granny

It's a policy the government had if more than one son was in the war. One of the generals of the military explains that he once had to personally deliver four letters to the same mother about all her sons being dead. Saddest day of his life.

So these brave soldiers find my grandpa most have been killed or put through holy hell Private JLdog decides he doesn't want to leave and pitches a fit like a bitch and stays and fights!! Well all the soldiers who just wanted to go home but couldn't leave private JLdog died.

My grandpa cries a lot at cemeteries he blames himself...no poo

My great uncle and grandfather were in WW2, also West Virginia country boys.

My grandfather was in the Navy and maned the big machine guns on the ships that shot at the Jap aircraft. Never got to hear any storys.

My great uncle was in there ground level, hand to hand with bayonet and all of that jazz. He came back hooked on drugs though, and everyone was scared of him around the town, he was insane, eventually kicked the drugs though. To the day he died he had a cane with a sword in it. Anyway, we didn't really know till he passed buy he had a slew of medals and actually saved his platoon or w/e by jumping up and taking control of a .50 cal machine gun to mow down enemies. He never spoke about this, at all, or hardly any of it really. We dedicated the medals of his and stuff to a VFW thing up there so people can see them.

Those guys didn't talk about wars much, they wanted to forget it. They didn't like the war movies either. Such a powerful generation of men AND women. When this country was at its finest.

Lots of old vets from wars in WV. Think it's the highest enlist rate per capita of all the states. It's like they all came back and realized what's important in life, and that's family, then had like 10 kids each haha.

My mom said she was told to never ask my uncle about the war, so she didn't. I know he went to several reunions, though. All of the info I have, I got from researching. I know he has medals, but they are lost to us. His last wife's daughter has them, and won't let anyone even see them. Me, my mom, and uncle h's brother's wife flew to FLA to at least see them, and she wouldn't let us.

    • True.  Sam and Baker did not do well here but went on to better things under better coaching, circumstances or both.  The real question is, ‘why aren’t the Panthers able to get improved performance out of ‘broken toys’, similar to Minnesota and Tampa? That is a rhetorical question.  I think we know the answer.   [The cultural reference to Pogo dates me, I admit.]
    • Did I mention that he was on worse teams?  Yes.  Do QBs alone win games?  No.  Did Cam, on a much better team with some awesome defenses ever have 2 consecutive winning seasons?  No.  So now you are cherry picking,  If the overall stats are similar, you take a look at him.   I told you that you look at his skill set---but you wanted to tell me that he sucks and mentioned performance.  I just presented performance--and his numbers are very similar to Cam Newton's numbers--a player most call the best Panther QB ever--and I agree.  By the way, Fumbles are evidence of how bad his OL has been--so you are saying that a QB in a situation worse than Cam's who has stats and physical abilities very similar to Cam's should not be given a look when you have Bryce Young at QB?  You are going with that story because you simply talked your way into a corner and now you are trying to save face.  No good GM would do what you suggest because "he sucks."  Sorry, but the facts do not support you.  But no matter what eye-opening details I provide, there are some who are going to go their Google machines to try to find some reason to support an ignorant approach to developing the QB position.  You ignored the similarities to Cam and went cherry picking.  I know what you are doing--but I am only suggesting (as I have stated before) that we bring him in as one of three approaches to resolving the QB issue. Compete with Bryce and draft a QB. Basically, I am suggesting that Jones has the potential to replace Dalton and compete with Young.  He is a battered stock that could get better in a better situation--that is human nature.  Instead, I am called a Daniel Jones lover and superfan.  That is good debate--But a real sign of mature thinking is the inability to LOGICALLY consider alternative perspectives--which is actually a characteristic of intelligence.  Just so you know, I critique and perform research in my job.  I am often amazed at how the numbers do not support my suppositions.  I learned that my impression is often wrong until I look at the data.  In this case, I have considered all the important variables and he should get a shot.  Numbers don't lie--and when you and others resort to twisted name calling directed toward the poster--it verifies my position.
    • I don’t get this, I know that is the popular thought process but I just don’t think it’s true.  For instance head to head last year the ACC had a winning record against the SEC.  The SEC had a losing record in bowl games. This year so far the head to head is 2-3 SEC and that’s with a fluke Vandy win in week one.  I see the ACC taking another head to head winning season after next week.  The SEC is mostly hype with 3 good teams, in my opinion.  But to say any ACC team would get exposed I believe is a stretch
