I don't think it's the system holding them back. The Canes are just another young team in rebuilding mode. At best I think they end up sneaking in maybe at a 7 or 8 seed in the East, if that.

Maybe it was because of the 1999 Stanley Cup, but Dallas has seemed to really latch on to hockey. Not sure about the demographics of DFW but like Raleigh and the state of NC in general there could be alot of northern transplants in the area.

Since the NHL started their Southern migration in the '90s, IMO there are only a few markets where hockey can succeed:

Carolina

Washington, D.C.

Dallas

Phoenix/Glendale

All of the other Southern teams should either be contracted or moved up North.

I think they'll get in as the 8th seed, but they will be a very dangerous 8th seed if you ask me. They'll continue to get better and better as the season goes forth... Your going to see some drops here and there due to the team being young and non consistant.
