Why is Jimmy not throwing more touchdowns?

Jimmy currently doesn't have coaches that have ever developed a QB.

Too early to say. Get a QB coach with a track record of developing successful NFL QB's and we'll start talking whether he is a bust or not. We have the QB coach that killed Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn right now.

Hint: If you don't throw the ball down the field, you can't throw touchdowns. When he throws desperations heaves like he did to LaFell, it was right on the money. Why not play with more desperation and takes chances. It isn't like he is avoiding picks as it is, might as well throw a few deep ones as well. At 1-10 we have little to lose.

Not trying to say your right or wrong just want to clarify something.

The bold part, are you referring to Jimmy neglecting recievers open downfield or Davidsons reluctance to call downfield plays?

Our WRs are terrible. Our OLine is terrible. He has a guy (or two) in his face as soon as he drops back and the receivers aren't exactly blowing DBs up left and right.

Same reasons why you saw Matt Moore throw a ton of INTs trying to force it deep. Clausen is just realizing the situation and taking what yards he can get while trying to limit turnovers.

I mean the guy still has a ton of things he needs to improve but I don't blame him for not trying to sling it downfield given the offensive system/playcalling/supporting cast.

I agree 100%

I'd rather throw an INT deep than one short in desparation. Dump-offs are certified Pick-Six Machines if you can read them.

He's too busy throwing checkdowns.

I've had my doubts about Clausen, but I'm beginning to feel like the kid might be ok in this league. The supporting cast has a lot to do with it, but Clausen has displayed good pocket presence and good decision making. Most importantly, he hasn't turned the ball over very often. At least not as often as we've seen in the last 2 years. He could thrive under a new coach and coaching staff, but one thing is for certain he needs to fix his throwing motion. That extremely low release is dangerous, watching some highlights the balls is almost skimming the helmets of linemen. He needs to find and use his throwing lanes, too many batted balls.

He needs to find balance. It looks like he is scared to throw down the field. Honestly the one play that he threw to the sideline where they said Lafell went out of bounds then inbounds, I though Jimmy was trying to throw it away. I can't recall him throwing deep. Does this kid have an arm? He needs to be quicker in decision making and not hesitate. He is in the NFL and things are a lot quicker. I am not saying I'm ready to give up on him but this improvement some of you are saying, I just don't see it. By improvment, you must mean not fumbling the snap. I like the kid but it is frustrating which him look indecisive, yes he is a rookie and it will come in time. I still want another QB brought in. Whether a vet or a draft pick. I don't really know much about this Luck kid so I won't comment about picking him.

There are guys open on almost every play. Clausen is so fixated on the dump off pass he doesn't look downfield. Wouldn't matter what was called.

Then you don't understand our offense. In order to open up the box and keep less than 9 guys within five yards of the line of scrimmage, we need to throw the ball downfield and establish a deep threat. Otherwise safeties sit on the run and short stuff and we get nowhere.

Clausen doesn't have to throw an interception just because he throws a deep ball. While it might not seem like it watching the Panthers, other teams actually throw it downfield and complete passes. Some with no better wide receivers than we have. St Pierre actually hit Gettis on the run on a deep ball last week so we know it can be done by a journeymen. Seems if Clausen wants to be the starter here, he needs to run the offense which is a vertical passing attack.

It is as much Clausen as it is the receivers or Davidson. So far he has 1 TD throw and 5 Ints. What exactly is he trying to limit?? TD passes???
