Clausen isn't going anywhere. He is going to be like Weinke. Had a terrible rookie season was replaced by a veteran or real franchise quarterback and will be a career backup until he eventually gets released after his rookie contract expires.

I would not say career backup yet..I think we bring in a guy that knows how to work with QB and see what he can do with him. If we get Luck then I can see Clausen getting a shot somewere else in year or two.

do you honestly believe Jake had a better game yesterday than Clausen?

You can honestly think he didn't?? Of course he was better. He threw for 245 yards completed 68% of his passes for a YPA of 7.0 and a passer rating of 64. Clausen completed 57% of his passes for 195 yards with a YPA of 7.0 passer rating of 63. He threw 2 picks and Jimmy threw 1. The difference was that Jake threw the ball down the field and made plays all day. He was also able to lead the team down the field in the fourth quarter for a winning FG. When Clausen had the chance he threw a pick. He did move them the last drive on a desperation pass and awesome catch by LaFell but honestly that has been his problem all year. He can't move the team in the 2 minute offense or at the end of the game when it counts. His completion percentage in the 4th quarter is no better than any other time and worse in the 2 minute drill. He has thrown no TDs in the second half. No matter what else, Jake was money in the fourth quarter and in the 2 minute drill.

Like I said he will be released and given a chance to play once his rookie contract is up. Might get a start here or there if the starter gets injured. Otherwise he won't look very good when there is an actual legitimate veteran here.

We both dont know whats in Clausen future..but I still think he will get a shot with another team to start if we draft Luck..

How many guys have we let go or traded while they were on a rookie contract. I will wait while you come up with one. Seriously I couldn't. If we kept Jarrett we will keep Clausen. He will get a chance to start here. And so far we can't keep a quarterback healthy all year so he should get a chance to play some. And once we let him go he will definitely get a chance to go somewhere else. If Carr got a chance so will Clausen.

Atiyyah Ellison

Corvey Irvin

I think very few would say that - but as I think you've said, and others have said or implied, if Clausen improves enough to move us out of the "Luck Sweepstakes", so be it.

Else, we'll have two potentially good QBs for a new coach to groom. It would not be a terrible position to be in.

yah, i've said that the best case clausen can make for us not drafting luck with the overall first is to get us out of contention for the 1st overall. crap...i would say if he can just get double digit TDs this year i would be more willing to give him a chance, but even with that, if luck is anywhere near the talent that scouts and harbaugh have been touting him as, if he has anywhere the potential that people like myself have been seeing, you have to take a chance on him. if you want to be the best, you have to try and take advantage of opportunities like that. sure, it could result in fail, but still could clausen, who has done very little to show he is worth building an offense around. i was one of the first in here to jump on his wagon, but that was before i saw how he played. i'm still open to the idea that he might be worth working with and if luck doesn't come out or someone ends up with a worse record, we might not have a choice.

re: keeping both young guys...that might not be a bad idea, but i think that clausen has more value to us as trade bait. i would also rather use that 2nd spot for a vet QB with a lot of experience and knowledge. i'm not really keen on the idea of having 3 QBs on the roster, but with the luck we have had the past few years, better safe than sorry. keeping clausen, drafting luck, and picking up a vet QB might be the best for us.

Yes sir, I would. This team has many holes to fill other than quarterback. I would trade out of the number one position to get extra picks. This strategy is a proven one (Cowboys in the Jimmy Johnson era).

Plus, for all the hype (remember the Clausen hype???), Luck is still an UNPROVEN commodity when it comes to his NFL chops (just like Clausen).

I say, give Clausen a good surrounding cast, then judge him accordingly. It is far too soon to judge this young gun.

there is a more proven strategy...drafting a top QB and building an offense around him. that has more of a chance to make this team great than trading and trying to patchwork on offense built around an inferior QB. there are lots of holes, but i don't think filling them with a lot of draft picks is the best way to go. we already have a very young team and it is struggling.

sticking with clausen...what if you're wrong about him and luck turns into a stud? luck has a lot more potential than clausen. how often are we going to get a chance to draft a QB like this? well...if we keep settling for just a hopefully okay QB, then we may very well end up with a top pick again in the very near future. chances are if we pass up luck, we will regret it for a long time. if we miss with it, at least we tried to make this team special. we'd be more of a failure if we tried not to fail. we've had enough of that with fox.

I'm not trying to make him something he's not. I'm simply stating that it is way too early to tell if Clausen will be a keeper or not. The way some of you guys make hasty decisions, you would have given up also on guys like Manning, Favre, and Aikman, all of whom struggled as rookies.

Just a "lighten up" call is all...again, I am not at all ready to grant Clausen the franchise label...just saying let's cool the hyperbole when criticizing him, that's all.

clausen could still be a good QB, but he doesn't have near the ceiling that luck has. i haven't seen anything from him that says it would be okay to pass up on luck. all there has been is glimpses of non-sucky play. no flashes of brilliance. no flashes of greatness. when you are faced with a choice like we might have at #1 overall, you have to look at what you could get and what you have right now and honestly look at clausen and ask if keeping him is worth passing up on luck. if you had a choice between the two, who would you pick? if you say luck, then you have no choice but to take him. the upside of that is that we wouldn't really be giving up all that much to choose luck over clausen.

so if we trade clausen do we bring matt moore back as the #2
no way. moore's time here is done. the only former panther QB i would want back here on the sidelines is mccown and even then, he's pretty low on my list. bulger, pennington, and hasslebeck are my top choices for who might be avialable.

If we go back further or include lower picks than the second round where Clausen was drafted the list is actually longer. I didn't do a very good of clarifying my point or liniting the draft picks to high ones. Still even with those caveats Sheldon would be on that kist as a second rounder and both Ellison and Irvin were third rounders. Although none of them were traded since they were considered busts by us.

Good point though.
