LaFell's Sideline Catch

It was my understanding that you can't challenge a play that if you won, the result would be detrimental to you? We won the challenge, but instead of an existing 3rd & 11, we get a 4th & 6. Can someone shed some light on this for me?

if you challenge a play the refs can then review everything. They reviewed it and it was an incomplete pass that we threw on 3rd and 11.....which does result in 4th down.

But it was 3rd and 6, and with the penalty became 3rd and 11. That means it was considered a completed catch, because otherwise the Browns would have declined the penalty and the result would have been a 4th and 6 due to an incomplete pass. So Fox challenges the play, and after winning the challenge, loses a down.

I've heard refs say before that a particular play cannot be challenged, because even if the challenging team won, the result would not be beneficial to them.

There's nothing that prevents coaches from making bad decisions on what to challenge. It's up to the coaches to know the potential outcomes and be wise.

Obviously, that's not always the case :(

I'm not sure which is worse at this point.

- If they knew that the potential result could be even worse than what we already had but still chose to challenge, that shows poor judgment.

- If they didn't know the potential result, why didn't they? Isn't it their job to know these things?

Either way, it looks pretty bad :frown2:

That was a very good catch by LaFell. Refs did not get that one right.

correct, but the refs were blind... when mike p. is on your side and the refs go against you, you know there's a mistake... that guy was perfect until that call.

Lafell stepped it up today. two great catches, and amazing recognition to roll out of bounds on his second one. Props to him - the guy is looking like a real bright spot from this draft.
