Hurney and mortgaging the future...

the players rally around fox...but they don't excel under him.

That's actually a pretty good summary of Fox as a head coach.

that last thing he did to get leaf was the ultimate fail. that is what i'm afraid hurney is due for.

That wouldn't dissuade me from taking Andrew Luck though (which I know is not what you mean to say).

yeah, i am all in favor of drafting luck, esp. since we don't have to give up too much to get him (i guess you could say we gave up the whole 2010 season to be able to pull that of, but thats another spin for another time).

i love the gambler aspect to an extent. it can be taken to an extreme and that is what i worry about. beathard got consumed by it and didn't know when to say when. i can see hurney doing the same thing.

Richardson, Morrison and the next coach might temper that.

I'm still in disbelief that the fine young male Patriots of all teams are going to have our #33 pick.

Is the league trying to hand them another dynasty?

/end the shitty trades please.

Other than cheating, the Pats do everything right and try to win every game.

I really don't know what I'm talking about I just want to prove I was reading and following this thread. TBH it is just too much thinking for me.

Considering Armanti looked better in the preseason at QB than any other QB on the team with his two passes.....it def is a protest by Fox and Co. It would embarass Fox to have anything to do with a QB that is not Tall and slow. I know he hasn't shown much at WR...but was that not a cheaper way of getting him?

Hurney and Fox both need to go. We need someone in here running the team that didn't used to be a freaking journalist or whatever profession it was that Hurney was involved with. We need a guy like Kevin Colbert from the Steelers or Scott Pioli from the Chiefs.

Give me Harbaugh, Luck, and whoever Kevin Colbert is grooming and I'll be a happy fan.

I'm getting too old to follow how many future picks were given up for a guy the Panthers drafted 4 years ago or how many picks the Panthers could have had if it weren't for trading up or down. I stay pretty elementary and simple and let you younger guys keep me educated.

That being said, I have not had any issues with Hurney's drafts, for the most part, until a couple years ago. We can lament a pick or 2 from each year that is regrettable- except that it is all hindsight now and we all know what that means. But the obvious risk moves are the ones that are starting to have an impact on the roster and on the talent level available to put on the field.

In my opinion, the 2009 and 2010 drafts have been terrible relative to Hurney's previous drafts. Terrible in the respect that 4th and 5th round talents were taken with much higher picks. I'm sorry, but I think your draft picks in the first three rounds should be ready to step on the field as a starter or really damn close to being a starter depending on who is ahead of him on that depth chart.

None of Carolina's first 3 picks were/are anywhere near being NFL caliber starters today and wouldn't be starting anywhere else in the league right now.

1 2 16 48 Jimmy Clausen QB Notre Dame

2 3 14 78 Brandon LaFell WR Louisiana State

3 3 25 89 Armanti Edwards WR Appalachian State

4 4 26 124 Eric Norwood LB South Carolina

5 6 6 175 Greg Hardy DE Mississippi

6 6 29 198 David Gettis WR Baylor

It's says something that both 6th rounders are the best players in this bunch right now, and Norwood will be ready next season.

Armanti Edwards- really? Seriously? I'm not from the Southeast and I'm admittedly not an App State follower, but I have absolutely no idea why this guy was drafted anywhere before the 6th round. One of the worst picks of the Fox-Hurney era in my estimation.

Everette Brown was a bonehead move as well. The boys upstairs were desperately seeking an immediate impact player for Julius Peppers and their desperation did nothing but get the team used and schooled when Hurney traded a major pick for him. In a draft where the DE pickings were slim at best, the Panthers went draft instead of free agency where there were several proven, accomplished veteran DEs available.

To simplify it a bit, just let me say that 2 years of drafts in 2009 and 2010 have yielded how many starters? Not starters because they were forced into action because of injuries, but legitimate starters coming out of the draft.

I see 2...

I could not agree more. The Patriots war-room probably started busted out laughing when we gave them this years number 2 and drafted him. I'll bet they still get chuckles out of it, remembering how incompetent that pick was.

I expect the best we can hope for Clausen is a LATE LATE 2nd or a 3rd at best.

People could claim he is damaged goods at this point.

Better he plays tho, the most likely he has value, also more likely we do something other than draft FootballJesus2011

I don't get the idea that we mortgaged our future but in the same breath, let's sell off all we have to the lowest bidder.

Not all of the picks that were mortgaged were in the spirit of "get better now". Otah was a player that we mortgaged picks for with the intention of using him that season, whereas Everette Brown (I have no idea why) and Armanti Edwards (at least he has a lot of potential) were two talents that the FO obviously saw enough promise in to draft as a project status.

By trading picks in up coming years you allow yourself to work with projects for a year before there are really any true draft day consequences. As such, none of these players should be judged until after the season when their pick is actually used.

Brown's pick was essentially used this year, has he proven to be a 1st round talent? Absolutely not, but he has improved over last year by a lot and is serviceable in certain situations, hopefully he continues to develop in the future.

Armanti Edwards pick will not be used until next year and we can only hope he lives up to that 33rd pick so all of you haters can shut the hell up. I think the potential is there for him to play either WR or QB (despite his height) and it really depends on the coaching staff to bring him along. This year may have hurt his development a lot for either because he hasn't had the continuity in either due to injuries.

Also Edwards was hurt by Fox's coaching style, which limited him being able to see the field. Because of his size and speed he is most suited as a number 1 receiver or slot receiver, he does not have the size to be a possession receiver or down field blocker. With Smith and Clowney, Fox has the "vets" he likes as his small guys and Lafell and Gettis, while both rookies, are large enough to be possession targets and downfield blockers on the side of the run.
