Do we need to worry about #2 WR

I will say YES...we definitely need another quality receiver, but for slightly different reasons.

1) Moose is old, and needs to be replaced (this is clearly a repeat of others' posts)

2) I personally believe in Jarrett, and think he will continue to get better, and be a legitimate threat in the NFL.

3) And the primary reason we need another top flight receiver NOW. Steve Smith is getting older each season. Unlike a Keyshawn or Harrison, Smitty's greatest quality is his freakish quickness. Harrison was able to last due to his tremendous route running ability. Keyshawn for his physical play and good hands, as well as a tremendous run blocker. I would guess that Smith has 3 really good years left in him, which means we need to be thinking replacement....RIGHT NOW!

Houshmandzadeh was not tagged today by Cinci. Shane Graham was. I know most disagree with me...

I don't.

Ideal WR situation for me is one that allows Moose to move into the "Ricky Proehl" spot next season. That means a different number two guy. No idea if he'd come here, but TJ is a classic "Alvin Harper" type second threat.

I could live with another year of Moose at number two if we acquired a legit receiving threat at tight end, but it's not an ideal situation. It'd be even better if we got a new number two and a legit TE threat. There's reason to believe Davidson would like more of a TE threat, but no real indication that Fox does.

The only way I can see improvement at both number two WR and tight end is if a dual threat TE is acquired and Dwayne Jarrett steps up as the new number two. My issue with Jarrett though, is that the proverbial "light" hasn't come on yet, and I'm not dead certain it's going to.

I don't think Steve Smith is going to be cool with a high profile, (Bouldin, Hooush, etc.). I think in theory he's ok with it, but if it becomes a reality I could see ego problems develop...

I think as long as we are winning Steve doesn't care who gets what.

He was asking Boldin what moving company he prefered :driving:

I agree with you in theory. But if it happened I could just as easily see problems develop when the other receiver is getting all the balls. He hasn't had to worry about that in the past so we don't know how he'll react to it...

I follow ya.

Just disagree :)

I DO think that Smitty was a major reason Key got fired though. Not that Smitty asked for that to happen or anything, but I don't think Smitty appreciated a guy trying to step in as his "mentor" when he feels his mentor is Moose. Smitty's very loyal. And JR loves him some Smitty. As long as the #2 WR didn't try to act like he was Smitty's mentor, I think Smitty would be fine with him.

The thing we don't know is if Housh will be content with being a #2 or since he will be leaving if he wants to be THE guy.

I agree with Mr S, it would be nice for Moose to be the Proehl type this season. I haven't lost faith that Jarrett can possibly step in because a lot of times it is year 3 that WRs "get it". Look at Santonio Holmes for example. Jarrett was definitely clutch when he had his chances this past year. I can't see everything on TV so I could be wrong but it seemed like he wasn't getting a ton of separation.

Do we need to worry about #2 WR

I think the short answer is yes.

The WR position depends on the QB position, which is fair to consider somewhat transitory at the moment. My opinion is that transition in the quarterback position may be compensated for by some fortification in the receiving group.

Delhomme is still the Panther's best starting QB. But Rip Scherer the new incoming QB coach, is coming in with an unbiased POV, and ought not have any preference for Delhomme over our other QBs. It is healthy and natural for players and fans to associate a positional coach replacement with a positional rank competition. In terms of general player management, I feel it is prudent to seize and exploit that opportunity by acquiring, at a minimum, a late round draft pick for QB.

Let's look at what passers we have. In Arizona, our QB2 Josh McCown did not appear to me to exhibit the right set of mental characteristics intelligence, confidence, and player respect. If he's still the same guy, I cannot imagine him surviving the Panthers' roster much longer.

But apparently McCown had passed Matt Moore on the depth chart. Can anyone explain that to me in detail why this occured? I expected Moore to have beaten McCown out. When I think about McCown being considered better than Moore, I am troubled by what I see after Delhomme. I'm worried that we have no potential starter after Delhomme?!?

Anyway, a certain amount of money will get spent on offense and defense this offseason. Knowing us, they'll be pretty even handed with the money. I'm not sure how much money we'll have to spend on BOTH and WR and a QB, and given the money we are already spending on Steve Smith, it seems like QB should get the nod this year.

Of course we should take this with a grain of salt, because we fans have thought the Panthers should beef up the QB every year. LOL

It would be a mistake though to forego our pursuit of our next QB. 2007 is more than enough proof of that.

If the new coach establishes some consistency and a clear pecking order on our QB bench, then I think we need a Ricky Proehl or Wes Welker type of receiver. First and foremost, a football player who blocks well, and doesn't drop catchable passes. 2008 was not as disappointing in terms of drops as 2007, but drops are still hurting us. We have to learn to hang on to the ball.

Many of the defenses around the league are going with large CB's who are very fast on the open stretch in full stride, yet not that agile on cutbacks and slants. These guys hit hard, and potentially stop long yardage TD's, but aren't that great in traffic or quick patterns.

Speedy and shifty Steve Smith, who had trouble with smaller framed CB's like DeAngelo Hall, should be incredible against CB's of large body frame, and yet he's not. Some of that is due to the lack of speed of Delhomme's release, which tends to be on 3, not 1 or 2. A case could be made that the Panthers haven't been using all of Smith's potential on the short pass.

Secondly, Smith sucker-punches his teammates in the face. Playmaker or not, that isn't the kind of behavior that Jerry Richardson gives safe harbor to for long. History shows disrespectful or volatile players get cut at the nearest strategic opportunity. I see no future guarantees for Steve Smith.

Dwayne Jarrett started out unsatisfied with his rookie contract. It spread his bonus money over 3 years, rather than the standard 2 year rookie contract that other draft picks taken before and after him got. Essentially, we wanted to delay his money while we waited for him to prove himself. Our skepticism was right, because over the course of two years, and multiple opportunities, that never happened. We can blame his poor route running on either stupidity, or the "undesirable" contract. Either way, he doesn't look good for us. Assuming we can free cap space, he should be cut, plain and simple.

Honestly, the only receivers that I think are good deals for the money are Dante Rosario and Muhsin Muhammad.
