Foxsports.com says Carolina fans should be thankful for Charles Godfrey

It's hard to post the link from my phone, but Fox Sports is having a Thanksgiving thing saying how each team has at least one player to be thankful for. They picked Godfrey for Carolina, further cementing the idea that mainstream media has absolutely no clue when it comes to the Panthers.

Godfrey is a big risk/reward guy, he's good in run support and is a ball-hawk but these same qualities make him a liability in pass coverage.

The good news is that Godfrey has the tools to be good in pass coverage, he just needs to learn when to take risks and when to play it safe, just like Chris Gamble did.

Matt Moore was awesome. I'm thankful to have seen him play the few times I did. Also Mike goodson is a treat.

I don't really believe in being thankful though. That's just some weak stuff. It's survival of the fittest. If we had better people in our organization we'd be better and that's the bottom line.

I just thought it was funny that out of our whole team, they pick Godfrey. We should be thankful for Beason & Anderson IMHO, and everyone else is either on their way out or expendable.

Edit: Gamble & Martin are awesome too, but I'm bitter that I can't find a Gamble twill sewn-on jersey, so he can kiss my ass too. :D

I'm thankful for Jon Beason. I do think our d would be a lot worse with out godfrey, not because he's that good, its just that we dont have depth. If he settled down and started covering the field the sky is the limit, the guy has the tools to be elite

More likely that it reinforces the idea that Panther fans (especially those on here) are clueless when evaluating the impact and value of Panther players.

All I heard was moaning about hoover, lewis, etc....and none of those are ven on an nfl roster.

There's an old, time-honored tradition among national analysts that I like to call "highlight scouting".

If all you see are the plays that make the highlight reel - a nice interception, a bone jarring hit, etc - some guys can look pretty good.

Watch the whole body of worth though, as the local guys are more likely to do, and you get a different story.

Everson Walls of the Cowboys was one of the better historical examples of it. I can remember analysts talking about how great a corner he was, yet when I watched games he played in most of what I saw was him getting beaten like a drum.

This particular form of scouting probably gets applied pretty well across the board. I tend to think quarterbacks, receivers, defensive lineman and cornerbacks profit from it the most.

I guess O-Line pancake highlight reels just don't share the same pizzazz as those other positions?

I agree, Charles Godfrey does seem to display enough talent at times to make you think that he could be good in pass coverage, but until he learns how to play a little bit smarter, we might as well have Gilbert Godfrey out there.

Personally, I would have chosen Beason, Anderson, or Munnerlyn to be thankful for.
