...Mark Koncz?

Browns fire personnel director T.J. McCreight

McCreight was actually considered a strong candidate for the Browns vacant GM job before George Kokinis was hired. He's being let go not for performance reasons but essentially so that Kokinis can put in his own guy.

Though the Browns have had their issues, they haven't done all that badly in free agency. Likewise the Ravens, McCreight's previous employer, have done okay in that department.

A new director of college scouting improved our drafts. Maybe a new director of pro scouting, someone with some actual experience and a decent track record, would help us to hit more home runs in free agency.

(or maybe I'm just tired)

this is one of those things that you don't ever worry about really because nobody really cares enough about it, if you get what I'm saying.

Until the Panthers sign Justin Hartwig to a huge deal...

I remeber a lot of people on this board discussing this exact issue last offseason. And just made a comment the other day about how we have only had like 2 FA pickup last for more than 2 seasons as a starter; Delhomme and Lucas. At least those are the only two I can think of in the Fox/Hurney era. An improvement is needed IMO.

Valid

With that said, free agency has been a very mixed bag for us for quite some time. A few hits, but a fair share of misses too. I've complained before, as have others, that our pro scouting department needed the same sort of makeover that our college scouting department had.

If we could improve in that area and have solid personnel acquisitions at both levels, it could make a fairly significant difference.

Besides, we've taken to raiding Cleveland for talent of late. This just continues that trend

Kemo and Diggs. Vincent has a chance. As does Brayton.

Others, not so good. Hartwig was never that great with us, and Hackett hasn't set the world on fire. Landon Johnson, anybody? (upsized contract for essentially one special teams tackle). Bridges has been mixed, likewise Darwin Walker. And then there's guys like Marquand Manuel.

Is McCreight a guy who could make a difference? Could be. Probably has more to do with the fact that I'm not that high on Mark Koncz though.

I have always wondered why we don't get anything at all out of our undrafted FA that we bring in.....some teams have hit some homeruns from that talent pool.

Because Fox doesn't take chances. He'd rather keep players like Goings. Sometimes it just comes down to a crap shoot and you need to roll the dice.

So as of now; Delhomme, Lucas, Kemo and Diggs are the only FA's in the Fox/Hurney era with more than 2 seasons starting. And looking at that list only Lucas and Kemo were considered to be big time signings.

I don't really question their ability to scout the talent of the players as much as look into the health risk involved in some of these signings. Wahle, Hartwig and Davis are a few that probably shouldn't have been signed to the deals they got considering their injury history. Maybe not so much Wahle and Davis as they did contribute for a season at a high level but the health issues surrounding Hartwig were pretty big and was just a dumb move on the part of the Panthers.

we continuously fail with FAs because when you set your mind on signing a middle-of-the-road player that's what you're going to get. our past several free agencies have been focused on signing other teams' cast offs and hoping they would do better here. and they don't.

I actually think they have done better with the so-called "middle-of-the-road" players. Last offseason the two big signings were Hackett and Johnson. The two that had the most success last year, Vincent and Brayton.

They just seem to strick out most of the time on the so-called "high talent" players.

When people were talking about hypotheticals last year, I did a number of things, including reassigning Hurney to a Vice President type role that would allow for a personnel-level GM to be hired. Didn't fire anybody but Koncz. Our pro scouting department has been awful, and sure, I'd welcome change there.
