I really think that if a CBA and rookie limits are set, we will trade down... That will be the most valuable move to us... especially considering last year's fiasco...

For every Luck, there is also a Couch... and for every Couch, there is also a Brady...

Thus is the crapshoot that is the draft... Look at the Pats and the value they get out of their picks that they stockpile after the first round...

Yeah, if the new contract deal is in place before the draft it's a possibility, because teams won't be terrified of the huge package to assume the #1 overall. We might trade down a few spots and grab either Peterson or the best DT maybe. Until then though, assuming both that Luck declares AND we pick #1 overall, I don't see any way it's not him, even if Clausen is tearing it up.

That maybe the case, but look at the cowboys.... Traded a bunch of picks for Williams, Had Austin on the roster, then drafted Dez.... I thought the pick was crazy.... but in the long run it will be worth it. He'll right now he's the only player of value on that team. So AJ Green is that and more and we end up with the 2nd or 3rd pick it would be hard to pass on him also.

I'm not trying to knock Green at all, he's a monster. Just saying that BPA looks something like Luck >> Green > Peterson (at this point, need to wait for the combine warriors to shake up the player rankings a little)

If he declares, Luck is easily the BPA and I'd be pretty surprised if we don't take him at #1 (provided we pick there).

Edit: I just noticed you said if we were picking 2 or 3, so disregard my above post, I'm an idiot.

The QB Position in the 1st round lately has not been a huge crapshoot... or 50/50 chance or whatever.

Over the past 3 years six of the 7 qb's selected in the first round has shown promise.

2010

1st pick Bradford- Looking up

25th pick The Golden Calf of Bristol- Shown nothing yet, was scouted as a wild card...reach

2009

1st pick Stafford- Played very well when not injured

5th Pick Sanchez- AFC championship, 8-2, 3 recent game winning drives

17th Pick Freeman- Currently 7-3, playing well leading the buccs

2008

3rd pick M. Ryan- Currently 8-2, Has played well, Tied for best record in the league

18th pick Flacco- Currently 7-3 Leading the offense while the defense struggles..

So those are the past 7 1st round NFL QB's.... Not so bad if you ask me. Doesn't seem like the huge crap shoot. Scouting of QB's is getting a lot better.

In all fairness the three years preceding that had 8 qb's selected in the first round... Only 4 were still starters last week, Young, Campbell, Cutler, and Rodgers..... But the truth is all of those 8 qb's were debated and had legitiment question marks entering the draft.

we aren't the pats and we shouldn't pretend to be them. they lucked up with brady. flat out lucked up. they had no idea what they had in him. they only knew that drew bledsoe had fallen apart and were without choices. it just turned out that charlie weiss had an offense there that brady fit perfectly with and that anyone, including someone who hadn't started since high school (matt cassel) could win with that they have been using ever since.

kraft is a smart and shrewd owner and they have been run incredibly well as an organization. they got rich and lucky and have been using it to their advantage ever since.

i hate the idea of believing that we could capture lighting in a bottle the way that the pats did with brady or the rams did with warner. i hate thinking that we have to rely on luck to pick up some stud QB that happens to fall through the crack like brees or warner did.

do we want to have a great QB? yes. do we need ot have a great QB? in the league today? yes. absolutely. do we have one? nope. i mean he might be good at some point....maybe in the right system.

it takes luck to find that special QB. we're getting lucky. we can't pass up that opportunity. you want that luck that the pats had with brady and the saints had with brees? you got to draft it when you have a chance. it isn't where you find that QB. it's that you do find him. you have a chance to get him, you get him.

What is even sadder is the #2 freaking pick given away by our genious front office for Edwards.

Brilliant. Simply brilliant, turns out to be the 33rd pick in the draft to the NE Patriots and people still defend Hurney on this board.

Link to where anybody knew that the 2nd round pick would've been #33? Otherwise statements like that have little to no value. Unless somebody here has a functioning crystal ball that tells the future of the draft.

drafting for need makes you reach for talent more than you usually would.

it needs to be a balanced approach. QB just happens to be an area of great need, among many here. is it the greatest need? it depends on who you are talking to. the thing is, the best possible player to address any of the needs we have is luck. he is the BPA among all the needs that we have. thats why we take him.

C'mon man.

There was absolutely, positively, nothing to suggest Edwards should have been taken that high. If a team is going to give up a 2nd rounder, that player best be capable of being on the field.

I suppose you also think trading up for E. Brown was a great move too.

It didn't take a lot to know the Panthers weren't going to be much this year, unless you are one of those homers who screams 'Super Bowl' every year.
