Mac/iTunes Question

Ok, so I just bought a Mac and I am uploading all of my songs from an external hard drive onto my new computer. Originally, I was letting iTunes scan my ext. HD for songs, but this was a really slow process. So, I copied my ext. HD to my desktop on the Mac. Now I am letting iTunes scan the folder on my desktop to find the songs. However, iTunes is saying that it is "copying" the songs. Does this mean iTunes is duplicating the # of copies I have of music?

On a side note, the songs that are showing up in iTunes all are duplicates in iTunes. So, does this mean my music is taking up 2x the space that it should???

Thanks...

I've copied my itunes many times, but only in Windows.

Usually, itunes will copy the library - which copies all the information about songs, albums, album covers, etc, but not the file itself.

Then it copies the file itself. That will show up as a duplicate. You have to manually go through and delete the duplicates - just make sure you keep the one associated with a file. One will probably say the file isn't found.

Mac may be different. But I'd imagine it would be somewhat similar.
