Clausen vs Luck vs Young... who would you want??

Not stupid at all.... When I said 80% I was talking about him performing plays that he will not run in the NFL. A lot of those plays were designed draws or option plays that will not be used in the NFL... that is what I was referring to. I watch a lot of college football, and I've seen auburn play 4, maybe 5 games this year. My opinion is based on him not having to make NFL type reads or go thru progressions.

As I said before he MAY beable too, but I have seen anything to prove that he will be a smart NFL QB that can make reads, go thru progressions, and sit in the pocket and make plays.

ALSO I NEVER SAID HE HAS NO POTENTIAL, you may want to reread my post.... I said he is simply a riskier pick because he has not had to do those things.

That goes for most option style system quarterbacks when entering the NFL. They maybe good, but it's harder to truly evaluate in terms of making NFL passes and reads.

Now as a contrast the Luck video that was posted in this thread has passes that he will have to make in the nfl... going thru progession, making reads, and delivering accurate passes from the pocket...

A lot of quarterbacks have tools, Cutler has tools, Jawalrus Russel had tools, Matt Leinart didn't have tools, But it's showing you can use those tools to consistently make NFL passes.

Vick has always had tools, but he has now learned how to use those tools and make the nfl throws and reads.

Luck doesn't really have to go through many progressions, his first or second read are open most of the time. That is what happens in college football. His accuracy is no better than Newton and his arm is not as good in my opinion.

He benefits from an offense that is well coached in Harbaugh and a defense that is also coached by an NFL veteran, Vic Fangio who has installed an NFL styled 3-4.

As for whether a quarterback will be good based on their system in college, that is not clear cut. Bradford in college at Oklahoma and McCoy at Texas didn't run traditional pro style offenses. But our own Clausen did. Look at how they are playing in the NFL and who is actually playing much better??

The old he went through progressions because he played in a west coast offense in college versus this guy can't because he ran a spread offense are inaccurate protrayals of a quarterback's potential. Who was considered more of a risk this year Clausen or McCoy? Seems to me that the whole riskier argument is a crock right now just based on last year's results.

If you look at it a guy who can throw and run and has better athletics qualities would seem to be a much less risk than a guy who can only throw the ball. And a big guy like Newton stands much less of a chance of injury. You could make a good case that Luck is the bigger risk compared to Newton not the other way around. A guy with Newton's size and less speed and a much worse delivery was drafted in the first round last year named The Golden Calf of Bristol.

Don't really agree that Newton is risky at all from a football point of view. From a character point of view you could surely make a case he is riskier.

We can get a vet qb, and go after tackle? Defensive tackle, de, or guard. All I feel would be better picks for the panthers.

lol...i keep hearing "get a vet QB"...what exactly are you hoping to find when you asy that.

now, i do feel like we need to get a vet QB as well, but mainly to have on the sidelines to carry the clipboard and act like a second pair of eyes. it would be great if it was someone who has a lot of playing experience and who could be thrown in without completely screwing up if needed.

mostly, though, i get the sense that people are wanting to find the next starter in FA. that ain't happening. every single one of those guys are long shots. if a QB was worth keeping and building a team around, they wouldn't be hitting the market. sure, brees and warner were there before, but do you really want to go into the year hoping that you might find some hidden gem so you can find the next kurt warner or whatever? you'll NEVER get anywhere doing that. you're trying to catch lightning in a bottle. are you hoping for a "serviceable" QB? that isn't going to cut it in this league anymore. you want to go to the top...you have to have a strong QB that is going to get you there.

it's time this team quit screwing around hoping that one day they'll stumble on some diamond in the rough that turns into the next superstar. you want to be the best in the league, then you are going to have to get the best players at every position, especially the most important position there is. the QB.

the benefits that luck has over newton is the intelligence factor and the ability to learn. also there are all those 'intangibles' that make him stand out as a leader on the field. i haven't heard much in the way of newton not being a leader, but luck appears to have it all. luck can also run when he wants and he is not a small guy. sure, newton has a 2 inches on luck and 15 pounds, but luck can handle his own. we aren't talking about some little fragile dude like pike.

i would feel good about either guy, actually, but i feel a whole lot better about luck.

I really haven't heard anything negative about Newton's intelligence or intangibles so I don't know how much better Luck is in that category. As for size Luck is not small or thin for sure but isn't close to being as athletic or as strong as Newton.

With that being said I am not opposed to getting Luck as a draft pick. I am just not feeling that he is the only guy out there or that if we don't pick him we are totally screwed from picking a franchise guy.

Well, there were rumors of Newton ordering a term paper when at Florida, so why cheat???? that draws some red flags, Luck goes to Stanford and is said to have a photographic memory, Luck is smarter, that's easy to see.

Now that Young is released the question is easier to answer for some, BUT for me, it's the same, Young has potential, but i just dont see him as a good fit in Carolina, he will be on a short leash with Panther fans and would likely be given up on quickly if he doesnt show up. Luck has the brightest future and IF he goes to the draft, you have to pick him.
