You coach to win the game! I don't care if you're incapable of winning! You coach to win! When Herm is implying he wants to do TV or take a much smaller job, this means he should retire, get out!

it was actually a joke on people who think players should automatically be position coaches when they retire.

I think that concept stemmed from when Sam Mills became a linebackers coach after he retired. But they don't make em quite like Sam too often.

Mills was the ideal kind of player to transition to a coach; a smart, hardworking, overachiever with true character.

On the flipside, guys who get by on talent or athletic ability or who constantly need to be prodded to do their best tend to make lousy coaches regardless of how good they were as players.
