Picking a favorite coach

Meh Cowher is one person I'd actually get excited about if they got him as a HC. That has been proven in the league to be able to make a winning team.. No it probably wouldn't happen but it would be intresting for sure.

Facing Cowher with...

- Dick LeBeau as his defensive coordinator

- the Steelers scouting department feeding him players

- and the engine of the Steelers system behind him

...that would scare me.

He'll have none of those things available to him at his next stop. Minus all that, I'm not so scared.

I think I'd hate to face Harbaugh. He seems to be the guy that could come in and infuse their team with new ideas and revitalize the players. Also he has alot of NFL contacts and could put together a great staff in short order.

I'm not a member of the Harbaugh bandwagon at this point, but of the candidates, he's probably the one that comes across as the most intimidating.

Realistically, the others could turn out to be better coaches or Harbaugh could be a flop. Looking at it right now though, he comes across as the guy most likely to stomp on your neck with one foot while he's kicking you in the balls with the other (all the while, smiling and laughing).

Harbaugh is going to be a heck of an NFL coach. He's smart and agressive, and he's been there. I'd hate to face him twice each season. Somehow, I think he will do a little more game planning and adjusting to his opponents' weaknesses than what we've become used to around here.

I would hate it if Ron Rivera was hired by a division opponent. But even more so I think Mike Smith and Sean Payton would be hating life if Rivera was hired by the Panthers. That alone is a big reason why I would love to see him given heavy consideration for the job in Carolina.

Harbaugh was a pro quarterback for fifteen seasons, and a good one. That's the closest you can be to being an NFL head coach while still playing. And yes, he has coached at the NFL level. He was an offensive assistant and a quarterback coach over two seasons with the Raiders.

I don't worry about him being able to relate to today's players. He can obviously coach college players, and he can rightly say "I succeeded in the league, I know what I'm doing". That does carry some weight with guys in the pros.

Of course, there's also the aspect that he looks like if you were insubordinate with him, he'd rip your face off :eek:

Keep in mind we're the youngest team in the league. A pretty significant portion of our roster is less than three years removed from being in college.

You could make a pretty good argument that a successful college coach might be better able to relate to this bunch than an older coach with a mostly pro background.

Of course, with Harbaugh, you wouldn't have to worry about disrespect or questions from the vets either because he's "one of them".

Again, I'm not on the bandwagon yet, but there's definitely some logic to it.

Ditka would probably do the other stuff and simultaneously punch you in the face.

When he's on the sidelines, Harbaugh looks like a guy you don't want to be within ten feet of (especially if you just screwed up).

Harbaugh doesn't scare me or make me nervous if I am an opposing coach...

Rob Ryan does

Leslie Frazier and Russ Grimm do to a lesser degree

I wouldn't loose sleep over Zimmer, Rivera, Fewell, Brian Schottenheimer or McDermott coaching the other team either

I feel that JR wouldn't hire Ryan and the Vikings will likely promote Frazier so unless a suprise candidate like Kevin Greene comes up in the interview process, I hope we get Grimm. He may not be a fiery personality type guy but he is a great coach.
