Gantt: Panthers could be looking for Fox's heir apparent

As I said, I don't know if Fox or Trgovac were more responsible for the defense's second-half collapse. But we'll find out soon.
Fox didn't do much more than have input, and it was after the defense started allowing a lot of points.

If he had taken over the defense completely ~ than I could see your argument.

If that was true, do you not think they could have gotten something worked out for all of these defensive coaches?

Do you think it was coincidence that they all jumped ship at the same time?

No, it was end of season and that's why. It doesn't get much more simple than that.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why Fox took over. Trgo's defense wasn't doing the job. Did Fox mess that much in 2005 and 2006 when we were in the top 10? Not that I have heard of.

But last year we got no pressure and had frequent lapses. This year we had decent stats but if you look closer we were the tale of 2 teams. Decent at home and poor on the road.Well before the bye we had a number of times where our secondary had missed assignments, the line wasn't that dominant and were giving up lots of rushing yards and still had lapses in the secondary particularly on the road. We gave 24 points to SD, 20 to Minnesota, and 27 to Tampa in our first 3 road games. Sure we were better at home but overall I can see why Fox stepped in. Did he make it better or worse? Hard to say since the competition improved and our offense was quicker scoring actually giving the ball to the opposition more frequently. Overall the result wasn't better but unless we know what parts Fox messed with it is hard to say his interventions alone made them better or worse.

Since Trgovac left, I've been ruminating on the whole "mid-season takeover two years in a row" thing. That strikes me as the most likely culprit behind his decision to depart. From his latest article, I'd say Gantt thinks so too.

My guess is he asked for a promise that he'd have more authority and less interference. Fox pulled his "the head coach is allowed to do that" stance, and here we are.

God I hope you're wrong.
