Breaking down Hurney's ability to draft and sign free agents

or how about we put more weight on the last 3 years than anything else and come to the conclusion that besides being a good cap manager hurney's pretty much got poo on any other gm

12-4

8-8

1-8

As of this exact moment the last three years has produced more wins than losses. He is a damn good drafter in the first round and has had some great value picks 5-7, I personally think he takes a few gambles in the 2-4 round on players who are high risk/reward. Up till last season everyone was lauding his trading ability, can one decision ruin the previous 7 or whatever it is?

Not gonna concede anything unless you include this year when Hurney is the GM. Or maybe we should only count seasons when the panthers are above .500.

Or maybe we should wait for seasons to be actually finished... If you honestly can't see that the entire FO has been working with severe restrictions then you aren't worth responding to from here on. Fine do not give him a pass, but do not make this season have any stronger sway over the others.

One big difference, the Patriots manage to get something from their mistakes and make others pay for theirs (a la trading up to get AE).

The Patriots get rid of players that are a) aging B) not performing c) don't fit the system d) before they cost a ton of FA money.

They stockpile draft choices and draft young players to replace the ones they lose and pick up valuable cheap veterans to fill in the gap.

....tell me, what did the Panthers get for the only player they had of value? ...and dont' say the contract xxx, the contract fails to Hurney.

Well done on taking a post and selecting part of it so that it was no longer in context

I quite clearly pointed out the Pats are the set up most owners/gms/hcs strive to be with their ability to foresight any problems and always seem to have a back up plan. All I was doing was pointing out that even they get things wrong from time to time and they nearly did what we did last season (I think it was at least). They jettisoned some older players with having inexperience in their place and they suffered for it. Luckily for them they had Bill Billicheck.

The reasons you picked out there are exactly why the Pats are always at the top or there abouts. Name me one other team that can do what they do season after season? The Steelers and Colts are the only other perennial contender and neither of them has the ability to pick up draft picks for players they were going to cut loose. What about players such as Haynesworth? Brees? In fact name me any upcoming big time free agent who the team managed to get compensation for... There will be some but they will be few and far between.

Correction:

12-5

8-8

1-8

21-21 that's exactly .500, and at the rate the team is playing, it looks like it will be much less than that percentage by the end of the year

How about we put those years into the magical context machine and see what we get?

I'm not a Fox/Hurney fan but in all fairness Hurney has drafted very well, especially down in the first 2 rounds. The problem I have is not benching Delhomme in 06 and making no attempt at finding a new qb, thats why we are where we are. Yes Delhomme was ok ONLY when our running game was blasting people and they didnt see that like everyone else. The way we used to run we could plug anyone in and they could pass the ball. Aside from the David Carr and Chris Weinke who statistically are both top 5 worst qbs ever to play the game. If he didnt trade our draft picks away for lesser valued picks every year I think he might of kept his job next year but thats what happened. No successful team does that regardless of our depth chart situations. Now we have a 1 down pass rusher and a wr that may never be a contributor for an 11th and 33rd overall pick. Thats f ing stupid man. ADVICE FOR HURNEY: If someone drops an entire round ask yourself: Am I that lucky? or Do these other teams know something we dont? take the latter

    • I get that my example was not exhaustive of all the reasons, but it also is that simple (generally). Which is why some teams pay players years before the get to FA to save some money and bet that the player continues to develop.  And I understand your point about Horn, but I dont think we are in a position to allow players of his caliber to leave. We had no succession plan for him. Had we let him go and Mike Jackson was our #1 corner on the team I might throw up. So we need to over pay to get some stability - and hope the injuries are behind us.
    • I think you have a very simplistic view of a pretty complex system, hence why you are getting emotional and confused. The league is going through a market adjustment period for several reasons(COVID cap freeze, new TV deal, etc) but paying top dollar for players that aren't clearly elite isn't typically a wise long term investment, regardless of market changes. Overpays literally happen every single offseason. We should know, we have done it over and over. Miles Sanders, Ian Thomas, CMC, etc, etc.
    • True. So you can say that he is not worth the money because he has missed a bunch of games - and thats a fair argument. But you can also say that when he is available he is 'one of' the best CB's in the league.  But now you need to value that. I doubt that he takes a deal worth less then he did (obviously) so then you need to determine is the draft pick we are going to get back for him worth it.  So you can do what we did, or you can trade the player, thereby making the defence worse, but you have most cap space sitting there.  So on sundays when we are getting blown out, you can still feel good that we have a lot of cap space.
