yep. vet leadership is important, but to live and die by it only means you have problems at the coaching level. if coaches can't motivate, they're worthless. that's their job. if the players aren't motivated, you have to look at the coaches. they keep the team together, focused, and energized.

Aaron Kampman, Dunta Robinson, Kyle Vanden Bosch,. We should have traded for Jason Cambell, Anquan bolden, or possibly Corey williams.

There were also some lower graded free agents out there we could have brought in.

We had high picks at the DE position, Johnson, Brown, and the draft was rated as deep for DEs. Signing Kampman or Vanden Bosch made no sense at the time.

The D secondary was a team strength. We also had a pile of $ in Gamble. No sense to make a play for Robinson.

Williams is on the wrong side of 30, would have required giving up draft picks and would have required over $ 6 million guaranteed by his existing contract.

Bolden had been whining about contract for years, and would have cost picks.

Jason Cambell. I would have loved to give him a shot here, especially since his current contract pays him less than Matt Moore. But we had to save draft picks so we could trade to move up for Edwards:rolleyes:.

Coaches are important for motivation, but theres nothing like having some vet leadership out on that field with you...

I got started thinking about this before the season even started. I was greatly concerned that we had lost a lot of veteran players to FA or just plain retirement and we had made no significant moves (or any) to sign any FA's.

It seemed clear to me that Fox and company were lame duck coaches. I mean if you are going young in order to rebuild the team for the future then wouldn't you either want to lock in your head coach for several years or start fresh with a new program. We seemed to take the worst course. We have a young team and a lame duck coach.

I personally don't think JR is cheap and uninterested in winning. So why do so little to put the team in any position to do well at all?

Could it be that JR has accepted that there will be a significant player strike next season? Maybe he saw no reason to lock in a lot of money and contracts when there very well could be a very redacted season next year.

I don't know. What do you guys think?

Welcome to the Huddle bro. JR has quoted before (long time ago) that he & "other owners" fear there will be a lock-out next season & no NFL football so he released the veterans who were making the most money & thought could be affordable to lose. Some were wise to release, others not so much. Even though it's a long shot, I think he was saving a bunch of money to hire an expensive coach such as Cowher or a bunch of talented & expensive players for next year. We'll end up with a draft in the first 5 picks & have a load of money to offer if there isn't a lock-out
